Amit Kumar ton leads Haryana's reply against Mumbai
Skipper Amit Kumar's wicket at the stroke of stumps dented Haryana's progress as they finished Day 2 in Kolkata on 263/5, trailing Mumbai by another 52 runs. Amit led from the front with a fine century - a 136 off 206 deliveries laced with 21 boundaries - as he put on two crucial partnerships in the 80s with fellow opener Lakshhya Dalal (34) and Yash Vardhan Dalal (36). Shams Mulani cleaned up Himanshu Rana soon after, but Amit tried to resurrect with the middle-order. However, Mulani struck again in the third over before stumps to send back the centurion. Tanush Kotian, who also picked up two wickets, earlier missed out on what could have been his third first-class century by three runs. Kotian nontheless led Mumbai's lower-order fight with a fine 97 that helped the team add 37 more runs to their overnight score and finish with 315 in their first innings following a top-order collapse.
Jaymeet Patel (88*) and Manan Hingrajia (83) starred as Gujarat secured a first-innings lead of 44 runs by stumps on the second day with another six wickets in hand. Chirag Jani struck twice in the morning session to reduce Gujarat to 79/3 but the the fourth-wicket stand of 133 between the two half-centurions put their innings back on track. Dharmendrasinh Jadeja struck at last to break the partnership in the final session but Gujarat were only five runs away from securing the lead. Since, Jaymeet and Urvil Patel (29*) combined for an unbeaten 48-run stand to go to stumps without further damage.
A top-order collapse triggered by Aditya Thakare's brilliant 4-18 has left Tamil Nadu in a spot of bother at 159/6 at the end of Day 2 of their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal against Vidarbha. Thakare struck thrice in his opening spell to reduce TN to 38/3 before Nachiket Bhute joined the party and made it 38/4 in the following over. Vijay Shankar (22) and Andre Siddarth C (65) then got down to repair the innings with their 95-run partnership. Thakare broke the stand with the wicket of the India allrounder before Harsh Dubey sent back the other set batter to leave TN reeling again. Earlier in the day, Vidarbha had added 89 runs more to their overnight 264/6 as Karun Nair - unbeaten on 100 overnight - went on to make 122, and Dubey made 69 to give their side a strong finish.
Auqib Nabi Dar ran through the Kerala batting with 5 for 36 to reduce them to 200/9 by stumps, still trailing J&K by another 80 runs. Nabi earlier in the day chipped in a handy 30-ball 32 in J&K's lower-order fightback, taking his side to a respectable first-innings total of 280 from the overnight 228/8. With the ball he struck in the third over itself, triggering a collapse of 3 for 11. A 94-run partnership ensued between Jalaj Saxena (67) and Akshay Chauhan (29) but Nabi broke through to kickstart another collapse of 4 for 32 runs. Salman Nizar, unbeaten on 49, remains Kerala's only faint hope at trying to minimise J&K's first-innings lead.
