McDermott 117 helps Tasmania make it two from two

Ben McDermott scored a fluent 117 and added 178 for the third wicket with Jordan Silk (85) but it needed the finishing skills of Simon Milenko (50* from 29) to help Tasmania chase down Queensland's 316 for their second win of the 2018 Australian One-Day Cup. Tasmania, who opened their campaign with a win over New South Wales last week, moved atop the standings having accrued nine points from their first two fixtures.

Tasmania's win, despite it being achieved with an over to spare, was not far from its share of drama. Wickets in pairs always threatened to peg them back every time they moved ahead in the contest. Matthew Wade got the chase off to a flying start, adding 37 in a little over five overs before he and one-drop Jake Doran were both dismissed in a 10-ball period. That followed the massive McDermott-Silk stand only for the latter and George Bailey to follow in succession. McDermott, who hit 10 fours and a six in his 125-ball innings, was followed to the pavilion by Thomas Rogers at a time when 67 were still to get off 44 balls. Milenko scored at a rate of 172.41 as the visitors ran out comfortable victors.

Earlier in the day, after electing to bat, each of Queensland's top-five managed to cross 300 with a 115-run stand between Chris Lynn (70) and Charlie Hemprey (58) the highlight of their batting effort. Joe Burns added an unbeaten 47 but a couple of untimely dismissals in the final-ten cost the team an additional 10-15 runs that could have proved the difference.

Western Australia vs South Australia

In a one-sided affair at the WACA, hosts Western Australia continued their winning momentum to win their second game on the trot after they made quick work of South Australia's under-par total on Saturday (September 22). Opener Josh Inglis laid the platform with a fluent half-century, before Ashton Turner (47), Hilton Cartwright (44) and Jonathan Wells (43) chipped in with vital knocks to stroll home with nearly five overs to spare.

At one stage, when they lost their fourth wicket with 94 runs still to get, it looked like there could be a possible twist in the proceedings, but with the required run-rate well under control, Cartwright and Wells killed off any hopes South Australia might have had with an 86-run stand.

The win, however, was set up by the bowlers, and the refusal on the part of South Australia's batsmen to kick on after getting their eye in. Although Jake Sutherland fell to Nathan Coulter-Nile for nought, Alex Carey and Callum Ferguson took them to 91 for 1 in the eighteenth over. But the middle-order soon lost its way, losing the next four wickets for a mere 37 runs, with each of WA's four pacers getting in among the wickets. Alex Ross and Cameron Valente started rebuilding with hard-run singles and twos, but once again, Ross' wicket triggered a collapse that saw South Australia scrap to just 237 on a flat Perth track.

Western Australia now sit on nine points, going past Tasmania to top the table, thanks to-rate a healthier net run, while South Australia, despite this loss, remain at the third spot with five points.
