Man of the Match goes to... Hafeez

Mohammad Hafeez | MoM (84 off 62 | 7-0-43-1): Everyone believed we can win the game. We were playing good cricket before but we weren't winning the crucial stages. Today, everyone really chipped in, and gave everything required in the situation. We were very confident. We practised well yesterday, had a good meeting, and we needed one winning performance to start us off. Bowlers did a great job defending the score. Batsmen did a great job setting a great total. The first game didn't go well, but we showed our capability today. I was trying to play my natural shots, and the first ball I came down and hit the boundary - so I thought why not take this approach straightaway? Whenever we come to UK, we have good support from the crowd. We know we have to play well because it's like a second home to us, and I'd like to thank the crowd for their support. We were playing well before, but we were not winning, and this win will definitely give us a lot of confidence. It will be a really happy dressing room and I hope it remains the same way.

Harsha Bhogle has the final say

#Phainta completed. What a performance. Few weaknesses to be addressed and we are on track. Very well done boys.#ENGvPAK #CWC19

Pakistan seal thriller

What an upset from Pakistan!! The unpredictable Pakistan have done it again, taking out the favourites England by 14 runs. In a game that had is fair share of twists and turns, Riaz delivered the knockout punch by dismissing both Woakes and Moeen in a single over. Root and Buttler composed splendid tons but Pakistan just about held their nerves to seal the game.

Earlier, Hafeez also played a mature hand of 84. Jason Roy would be pondering somewhere about the fluffed chance that gave Hafeez the reprieve. England's fielding on a whole was way below par.

Pakistan in front in a thriller

Just when England seemed to be getting on par, Moeen couldn't pick the slower short ball from Riaz and sliced it to backward point. Riaz then bowled a quick delivery on back of a length to remove Woakes. Wickets via successive deliveries!! Riaz is fired up.

Pakistan edge ahead...

England fight

Pakistan still have the edge but England's lower order is fighting. Moeen, who has been terribly out of sorts in the tournament so far, clubbed the pull of the final ball off the 47th over. 38 needed in 18 balls. You would still bet your money on Pakistan

Prized scalp for Amir!!

Buttler reaches the landmark in trademark style with a handsome shot drilled through extra cover off Amir. Wonderful innings. Unfortunately for England, Buttler was dismissed the very next ball, edging a slower one to the man behind square. Is that the final nail in the coffin?

Pakistan's fans are going crazy. The Pakistan camp is ecstatic!! Huge moment of the game.

Sarfraz fluffs one

Action and drama in the middle! Moeen couldn't pick the googly from Shadab and eked out an edge but Sarfraz couldn't hold on to it. It has to be said the chance wasn't easy.

Huge wicket!

Unfortunately for England, Root fell at a crucial juncture, carving one straight to the fielder behind square. It was fired in on a length and in the channel outside off from Shadab and Root could only crack it straight to the fielder. Root is almost down in tears. But it was a splendid knock from the England bedrock and gets a standing ovation for it.

Calm and collected Root compiles ton

Impressive hundred from Root. He has anchored the chase superbly, combining a diet of singles and twos with well-timed boundaries that bisected the gaps with perfection. As he acknowledged the crowd by raising his bat, one could listen to chants of #Rooooot".

Meanwhile, Buttler has continued to showcase his pyrotechnics. The way he tailored the gap in 35th over via backward point with a backfoot punch capsulises the point.

Buttler's magic

What a fifty this from Buttler!! He is a special batsman and reaches the milestone in style; nonchalantly flicking Shadab over the ropes. He blends power with finesse to explore every nook and cranny of the stadium. Class and quality. On the other hand, Asif Ali seems to have hurt himself with trying to pouch the catch.

For Pakistan, Riaz has bowled his heart out but with no real luck. He even generated a hint of away swing with the old ball to produce the edge of both Buttler and Root but Sarfraz didn't have the first slip in place.

150 required in 19 overs.

Buttler and positive intent

Buttler has come out with positive intent to give England a glimmer of hope. The way he scooped Riaz over the 'keeper's head and then crunched a sumptuous drive off Shadab through extra cover gave a glimpse of his class to explore all corners of the ground. Root, at the other end, has anchored the innings superbly.

Pakistan in control

Stokes too has been dismissed. The slide continues. The all rounder tried to cut Malik but could only eke out an edge. Sharp catch from Sarfraz behind the stumps. The unpredictable Pakistanis are again at it.

Steady Root compiles fifty

In the midst of all the wickets falling around him, Root has played with a calm head on his shoulders to compose a fifty. England still have a long way to go though and the track is offering enough for the bowlers.

Erasumus isn't happy with fielders throwing on one bounce as the ball would get scuffed up.

More trouble for England

More trouble for England as Morgan attempts a cut and is cleaned up by the man of the moment Hafeez. Poor shot from Morgan and England are in some trouble. Pakistan are cock-a-hoop and on top.

Riaz picks up big scalp

Just when Bairstow and Root looked set to take England to a safer position, Riaz removed Bairstow. It was the off cutter that perhaps kicked off the surface to take the edge. Bairstow played with angled bat and that cost him. Celebrations in the Pakistan camp.

Root dropped!

Amir is the middle of a good spell but doesn't get the reward for his efforts as Babar Azam puts down a catch at first slip. It was angled across Root who played an airy fairy drive only for the lone slip fielder grassing the chance.

Early setback

Poor review from Roy. He looked to slog sweep Shadab but missed a googly. It looked as if it would crash into the off stump. However, the opener took the review but to avail. Early setback for England. And to rub salt into wounds, Roy seemed to be sledged on his way back.

Bairstow and Roy v legspinner... again

Well, Pakistan are opening with a leggie too - Shadab Khan. Mind games from Sarfraz. Can Bairstow and Roy handle the legspinner?

Pakistan finish with flourish

Pakistan finished with a flourish as they ended up with a sizeable 348 for 8 in 50 overs. Hafeez, Sarfraz and Azam all crunched fifties. Not a good day for Roy or England in the field. Roy dropped a sitter and there were misfields from others too.

Can England's powerful batting unit chase this down? Remember it is a World Cup game. What would be Pakistan's tactics? Will they start with Shadab against Bairstow?

On a side note, Morgan's England couldn't finish their quota of overs within the stipulated timeframe.

Woakes takes two...

Two wickets in an over for Woakes. He has dismissed both Sarfraz and Riaz. Pakistan, meanwhile, are looking to push towards 350.

Ragged England

England are running ragged at the moment. Misfields, overthrows... not their day so far. Even Archer is going for plenty. On a slightly positive note, Wood has dismissed the dangerous Asif Ali. However, Sarfraz has crossed the 50-run mark and Pakistan look set to reach 350.

Hafeez falls after splendid innings

Hafeez's sparkling innings has come to an end. He twinned melody and sweetness through the course of his innings to compile a quickfire 62-ball 84. He has given Pakistan hope of posting a famous win.

The veteran lofted one straight into the hands of Woakes at long off and the England pacer has safe hands.

Shot of the match

Hafeez has played the shot of the match so far! Just nonchalantly flicked Wood and it flew away into the midwicket fence - short side of the boundary. That would make it to the highlights package.

Danger times for England

Hafeez and Sarfraz are dealing in boundaries. Sarfraz crunched a couple of shots over the fielder at mid on and it scurried away to the fence. Hafeez then smacked the pull off Stokes. You would rather have the mid on back in the slog overs. Danger times for England...

Not Roy's day out...

Roy isn't having a good day for sure. He dropped a sitter early on. This time he slid over the ball and allowed the batsman to escape from getting run out. Hafeez was the batsman again. Maybe it is his day!

Azam throws it away

Just when Azam looked set for a massive score, the talented batsman has thrown it away. The lofted shot was quite unnecessary as Pakistan were going well. He skipped down the track and mistimed it slightly and could only spoon it to the reliable Woakes at wide long on. Moeen has snapped up all three wickets to fall so far. His spin colleague, Rashid, however, hasn't had a good day.

Hafeez, who is looking in good touch, needs to get a big one. He has also completed an enterprising fifty.

Fifty for Babar Azam!

A maiden World Cup fifty for him. "No real celebrations in the Pakistan camp, just an acknowledgement - thumbs up - from Hafeez," observes our ball-by-ball commentary. Pakistan know they have a long way to go.

Dropped catch

Jason Roy, one of the best fielders they have, has dropped Mohammad Hafeez. Sun in his eye? Definitely didn't have his shades on at long-off!

Another stunner!

England continue to impress in the field. After Ben Stokes turned into a Superman at The Oval, Woakes gave a wonderful exhibition of athletic fielding by diving at long off to pouch a stunner! It was a well-timed lofted shot from Imam but Woakes' dramatic effort ensured his innings would come to an end.

Moeen has picked up the wickets of both the openers.

Moeen comes to rescue

Fakhar, however, couldn't survive for long. The southpaw was stumped of the bowling off Moeen. He got one to drift and it turned to beat Fakhar's edge. Jos Buttler, who has missed a few stumpings in the recent past, effected a quick stumping. Huge wicket for England.

Close shave and wrong end

Mix up in the middle but no damage done. Fakhar was well down the pitch after slogging one to the fielder at mid off but Morgan rocketed the throw to the non striker's end and Fakhar escaped. Close shave for Zaman.

Imam, Fakhar on the charge

Pakistan seem to have put the loss against the Windies behind them. Imam charged down the track and tonked Woakes for a six while Fakhar scooped the same bowler into the boundary hoardings. Good old unpredictable Pakistan.

Keen tussle

Jofra Archer has bowled with good penetration and even beat Fakhar in the channel. He got one to angle away and the next to nibble in a tad. Woakes has been steady. However, Fakhar, in particular, has played some intent so far.

Ready to go...

England and Pakistan go through their respective National Anthems. The Pakistan openers are out in the middle. Woakes has the new ball in his hand. Interestingly, there is a strong breeze blowing around. The track looks like a belter.

Teams and captains speak

Sarfaraz: I also wanted to bowl first. Looks a good batting pitch, so we're hoping to put runs on the board and defend. I think it's a one-off performance and hoping to get things right today. Yes, we batted well against them in the recent series and hopefully, that will continue.

England (Playing XI): Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan(c), Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler(w), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood

Morgan: We're gonna bowl first. Looks a good wicket and the dimensions are smaller than The Oval. So we need to look at all that. We have one change - Wood comes in for Plunkett. Reason for this is the genuine pace that he provides. A bit yes and also he bowled well in the recent series against them. We're always looking to improve and striving to give a perfect performance. Of course you don't get near to it all the time but if you try to get there, you're in a good space.

Toss

England have won the toss and elected to bowl. The track should stay firm over 100 overs and the toss shouldn't matter much. Mark Wood replaces Liam Plunkett while Shaoib Malik and Asif Ali come in for Pakistan

Pitch report: "This has been a pitch that the bowlers have struggled to defend on and the reason for that is the longer dimensions at the pavillion end. Square boundaries are very short and that makes things difficult for the bowling side. This is a lot drier and harder surface. Good for batting and the bowlers will struggle. Lot of variations needed as a bowler. Win the toss and bat." opine Wasim Akram and Kumar Sangakkara.

Build Up:

Pakistan received a mauling in their opening encounter of the World Cup against West Indies - losing by seven wickets. However, the Asian nation is known to be unpredictable and could still spring a surprise in their next few games.

Unfortunately for Pakistan, it isn't going to get any easier as their next opponent is one of the fancied sides of the tournament, England. The formidable England side put up a thoroughly professional show to usurp South Africa by a margin of more than 100 runs at The Oval.

Can the mighty fine batting line-up containing Roy, Bairstow, Root, Buttler, Morgan and Co. fire? Or will Pakistan's batting rise to the occasion? The Pakistan camp would be hoping for the cornerstone of their batting unit, Babar Azam, to come good.

Pakistan will be again playing at Trent Bridge. The track is expected to be a belter and we could be in for a run-fest.
