Australia win by 86 runs

Set a tricky 244, New Zealand's batting crumbled under pressure as they were shot down for just 157. They still, however, have a good chance of ending in the top four if they win their game against England. If India beat England on Sunday, New Zealand will go through with India leaving England in some doubt.

When New Zealand do sit down to reflect after the game, it'll be the crucial moments that left them hurting. They were mercurial on the field - oscillating between stunning to mediocre. Usman Khawaja and Alex Carey helped Australia build a score after they were reduced to 92 for 5. Cary (71) and Khawaja (88 off 129) scored 107 for the sixth wicket before Trent Boult picked up the second hat-trick of this World Cup when he dismissed Khawaja, Mitchell Starc and Jason Behrendorff in the final over.

The damage, however, had been done by then. Khawaja had been dropped by Martin Guptill at second slip even before he had opened his account. Guptill was also guilty of dropping Aaron Finch in the second over of the contest. New Zealand, though, had made a superb start with the ball. Boult had nullified the Finch threat and then Lockie Ferguson put the side on top as he bounced out David Warner and Steve Smith, who fell to a brilliant one-handed stunner by Guptill at leg gully.

Marcus Stoinis picked up three boundaries in the first 11 deliveries he faced and then fell as the boundaries dried up. Jimmy Neesham's second blow, after Stoinis, was a big one as Maxwell pulled and ended up playing the ball back to the bowler. Australia were wobbling and were desperate with more than 28 overs to go. Khawaja dug deep and took it slow while Carey's positive intent gave his partner the cushion to play at a comfortable pace.

Both batsmen were dropped as Tom Latham too was guilty of being lethargic. Carey eventually fell in the 43rd over as he found Guptill at cover off Williamson. Khawaja did kick on after the 45th over but the big flourish never arrived. Boult bowled Khawaja and then produced two brilliant yorkers to Starc and Behrendorff. While Starc lost his poles, there was more drama as Behrendorff reviewed the lbw call only to lose the review.

With a tricky chase ahead of them, New Zealand were guilty of adopting an over-cautious approach. Henry Nicholls, in for Colin Munro, just wasn't able to get going and struggled for 20 deliveries before was caught behind down the leg side. Guptill's patchy day came to an end as he became Behrendorff's second victim after being pinged in front. Williamson and Taylor scored 55 for the third wicket to bring the chase back on track in the next 11.5 overs as the New Zealand captain crossed 6000 ODI runs.

Williamson's dismissal triggered a collapse as the fatalities of the middle-order were exposed thoroughly. Williamson guided a Starc off-cutter straight to the 'keeper while Taylor's top edge off Pat Cummins was swallowed by Carey. Latham, who had averaged just a shade over six before this game in the tournament, made 14 but a slow-moving pace as the asking rate soared. Colin de Grandhomme was handed a golden duck while Neesham huffed and puffed to nine off 22 before falling to Lyon.

With an inevitable loss charging towards them, New Zealand would have wanted to reduce the margin of defeat but Starc's thunderbolts wrapped up things quickly.

Seven down

Neesham goes now. Caught and bowled by Lyon and New Zealand are crumbling fast.

New Zealand 131 for 7

Oh, no, oh, no

What did I just say? De Grandhomme to do the damage? He's bagged a golden duck. Smith's legspin consumes him. Tossed up and smashed to long-off.

New Zealand 120 for 5

Four down

Cummins bags one wicket now. Asking rate is almost seven and Taylor has to up the ante. He's caught behind trying to slog and gets a top edge. New Zealand have got Neesham and de Grandhomme to do the damage but need Latham to kick on. 126 more needed and the asking rate is close to seven.

New Zealand 118 for 4

Williamson falls

Off-cutter from Starc. Williamson wanted to guide that one to third man. Plays it straight to the keeper.

New Zealand 97 for 3

25 overs done

New Zealand now need 152 off the last 150 balls in the game. Williamson has crossed 6000 ODI runs and is looking to it in his usual way by taking the game deep. Taylor is on 20 off 39 and is looking scratchy. The spinners are hard to get away on this track and Australia are banking on Finch, Maxwell and Lyon to do the job.

New Zealand 92 for 2

Another drop

Williamson survives again. Away going delivery from Jason Behrendorff and it takes the outside edge. Carey dived full stretch and gets a glove to it.

New Zealand 52 for 2

Dropped!

Oh, Williamson. Make this count. Tossed up by Lyon and he gets Williamson coming forward. Outside edge evades the gloves of Carey but deflect off the knee. Smith is sleeping at slip and even with the pace taken off, fails to hold on.

New Zealand 46 for 2 in 15

Two for Behrendorff

Full, straight and Guptill lbw. Easy. New Zealand are now under a lot of pressure because of their slow start. Ross Taylor and Williamson now need to rebuild.

New Zealand 42 for 2

Powerplay done

A very cautious start from the New Zealand openers. Guptill's looking good while Nicholls tried to settle in. A close lbw shout against the former wasn't given in the eighth over and it was umpire's call and the ball was clipping the leg stump.

Some good bowling as well from the Australia quicks - Starc, Cummins and Behrendorff and it finally resulted in a wicket. Down the leg and tickle to the 'keeper.

New Zealand 31 for 1

Alrighty then, Guptill and Nicholls to open for New Zealand. Jason Behrendorff is with the ball. A semifinal berth is at stake. This is a big chase ...

End of first innings

Australia staged a remarkable comeback to post 243 for 9. Midway through the 22nd over, Australia were reeling to 92 for 5 but Usman Khawaja (88 off 129) and Alex Carey scored 107 for the sixth wicket to help their side recover and then edge ahead on a track where chasing will be tough.

Trent Boult became the second bowler to pick up a hat-trick after Mohammad Shami as he dismissed Khawaja, Mitchell Starc and Jason Behrendorff in the final over to achieve the feat. Kane Williamson and Co. now need to pull off a tough chase to become the second side to qualify for the semifinal.

The game got off to a frenatic start with plenty of action in the first 12 overs soon after Aaron Finch chose to bat. Martin Guptill was in the action from the second over as he grassed two chances to give Finch first and then Khawaja a reprieve. The Finch threat, however, was nullified by Trent Boult in the fifth over as the Australia captain was pinged in front after a scratchy start. The Khawaja drop though hurt Australia as the left-hander was yet to open his account when he as given a lift at second slip.

Lockie Ferguson came into the attack in the tenth over and in his first two overs rattled Australia with some sheer pace. Both David Warner, caught behind, and Steve Smith, caught at leg gully, were bounced out by the pacer as New Zealand surged ahead. Guptill took a one-handed stunner to make up for his early mistakes to dismiss the former Australia captain with just 46 on the board. Marcus Stoinis's adventurism was just what Australia needed at that stage to get out of the wobble.

A chip over mid-on, a crash past point and a missile wide of cover meant Stoinis picked up his three boundaries in the first 11 deliveries he faced. The 35-run stand, however, was broken by Jimmy Neesham as Stoinis's frustration, with the boundaries drying out, getting the better of him. Neesham then landed another body blow when he caught and bowled Glenn Maxwell to leave Australia reeling at 92 for 5.

From there on, Carey and Khawaja did an exceptional rebuilding job as the pair got together for the next 21.3 overs. While Khawaja was cautious, he was allowed his space by Carey, who made 71 off 72, punching in 11 boundaries. Khawaja got to his half-century off 80 deliveries while Carey took 48. New Zealand missed the trick by keeping Boult away from the attack as the two left-handers continued to keep the scores moving.

The century stand eventually came to an end courtesy a soft dismissal as Carey found Guptill at cover off Williamson. Khawaja did kick on from the 45th over onwards as he moved to 80 off 120 with four overs left. He, however, failed to provide the big flourish as only 34 runs were in the last five and was bowled by Boult with three balls to go.

New Zealand were brilliant in the field in patches and awful a lot more as the frustration crept up. Tom Latham dropped two, Guptill played his part and so did Williamson. Pat Cummins tried his best to find the boundary fielders only to see the ball not being attacked.

Carey falls

As easy as it gets. Tossed up and Carey wanted to blast Williamson through covers. Lobs a simple catch to Guptill instead. The 107-run stand comes to an end.

Australia 199 for 6

Australia 188 for 5 in 40 overs

50 for Carey

Australia have recovered well here but need both Khawaj and Carey to carry on. The latter too has got his half-century and with 13 overs to go, Australia need a big finish

Australia 172 for 5 in 37 overs.

30 overs done - New Zealand on top with Australia 136 for 5

Maxwell fails

A body blow for Australia. Back of length and Maxwell wanted to pull. End of the bat and the bowler completes the catch.

Australia 97 for 5

Four down

Neesham joins the party now. Length ball and a poke from Stoinis. Easy catch for the 'keeper.

Australia 81 for 4 in 20 overs

Guptill, you beauty!

He makes up for the two drop catches earlier today. Short ball and aimed at the neck. Smith pulls and doesn't connect well but gets enough. Guptill is at leg gully and pulls off a one-handed stunner just when it seemed the ball was past him.

Australia 50 for 3

Early trouble!

What a start from pacy Ferguson. Just bowls it behind length, the extra bounce takes Warner by surprise. He looks to leave it but the ball takes the gloves and lands with the 'keeper. Superb start this from New Zealand on a track where it will be harder to chase.

Australia 40 for 2 in 10 overs.

Oh, dear!

Two chances dropped by Guptill now. Full and swings away from Khawaja. Carries nicely but is a bit low. Drops that one at second slip. Early pressure from New Zealand and they could have easily had two.

Australia 16 for 1 after five

First one

Finch struck a glorious on drive and is lbw next ball. Swung in, nipped in and caught Finch at the crease. No doubts about that one and he doesn't take the review.

Australia 15 for 1

Dropped!

Boult started with a maiden and Colin de Grandhomme creates an opportunity. Full and straight, driven to short cover and Guptill gets one hand to it. Doesn't stick. Tough, tough chance. It wasn't far but it was traveling.

Two maidens from New Zealand to start.

Alright then, the national anthems are done. Warner and Finch out to open. Boult to start for New Zealand. It's buzzing at Lord's and we are all set. Excited?

Toss - Unchanged Australia opt to bat

Rest for Starc and Cummins? Not really, says Aaron Finch

Hello and welcome to the live blog of the ICC World Cup 2019 clash between New Zealand vs Australia in London. First things first, New Zealand need a win to qualify for the semifinals. Australia would want to make them wait and cement their chances of finishing in the top two with a win. If New Zealand lose today, they can still qualify if India go on to beat England tomorrow.

The last time these two sides met in the World Cup, it was the final in 2015. Stakes were a lot higher then and revenge will also be in the minds of the New Zealand players. The Kiwis have snuck through under the radar as always, but there are issues with their batting line-up that has come under the spotlight. Openers Martin Guptill and Colin Munro have hardly got going, and it could open the door for Henry Nicholls to slot himself in. You'd expect Munro to make way for him in that case, unless Nicholls is brought in to don the wicket-keeping gloves in place of the under-performing Tom Latham, who has had a shocking World Cup and averages 6.75 in 5 innings. There's also talk of a possible call-up for Ish Sodhi in place of Mitchell Santner, whose provided a calming influence so far without really having an impact.
