STUMPS - DAY 3

For a brief period on day three, everything seemed fine in the South African camp. England went from 136 for 3 to 160 for 6 with Ben Stokes, Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler were all dismissed in quick succession. There were smiles and high-fives in what turned out to be another day dominated by England. They folded for 248 and set South Africa 466 for a win. Four-day Test anyone?

Once they were reduced to 88 for 6 late on the second day, after conceding 400, not many expected a South African comeback. And there wasn't one. Only periods of play throughout the day went in their favour. Vernon Philander was dismissed on the fourth ball of the day but Quinton de Kock and Dwaine Pretorius (37) scored 79 for the eighth wicket as South Africa seemed set to avoid the risk of following-on.

But Stokes opened the door first - wicket the wicket of Pretorius - and Mark Wood finished things up in a jiffy to leave South Africa with just 183 on the board and trailing by 217. Wood first nipped out de Kock and then had Dane Paterson to end with figures of 5 for 46. This was his second five-wicket haul in the first after his 5 for 41 against West Indies.

The second session only brought more misery for the hosts. Dominic Sibley and Zak Crawley did almost everything right for most parts of the session. They scored 56 for the opening wicket and saw off the new ball to lay the perfect platform for the middle-order. The hosts were also hampered by the absence of Vernon Philander. The pacer bowled just nine deliveries and had to leave the field because of a hamstring issue. To add to insult to injury, he was also slapped with one demerit point and a 15 per cent fine for his send-off to Buttler last evening.

Dwaine Pretorius - whose first spell read 5.3-0-5-0 - gave South Africa an opening when he had Crawley caught behind. Joe Denly lasted just 15 deliveries but Joe Root and Dominic Sibley stretched the lead past 300. The latter fell for 44 early in the final session but Stokes arrival only increased the run flow. The left-hander struck six fours before falling for a 24-ball 28. Anrich Nortje then hurt England's progress even more with the wickets of Pope and Buttler - both caught behind - as the 'keeper completed 200 fielding dismissals in Tests.

Sam Curran too had his fare share of fun as the lead surged past 400 before his dismissal. Trying to pull a short ball from Beuran Hendricks, he was caught at fine-leg as the pacer got his fourth. Root got his 48th half-century and in the process also pushed his side towards a 3-1 series scoreline. The day ended with a blinder from Faf du Plessis as he flew to his right to grab a one-handed stunner to dismiss the England captain. The catch also gave Hendricks his maiden five-wicket haul in his debut Test.

Root's got his 50, lead past 450, it's been all too easy for England today!

Buttler tries to attack and perishes. Back of length ball and he wanted to play that one on the up. Another catch for de Kock. Can South Africa keep the lead under 400?

Time for Pope to go now and Nortje joins in on the fun. Back of length ball, he wanted to cut it and is eventually caught behind. England's lead now 374.

Stokes gone

Length ball from Hendricks and Stokes wanted to boom it through the off side. Gets a thick outside edge and is caught at slips. Played on his ego as Stokes was looking to be aggressive.

Three down

Hendricks gets Sibley caught at midwicket. No half-century for the England opener. He falls for 44 and looks disgusted with himself.

TEA - Day 3

England's lead 303. Wickets lost - Zak Crawley and Joe Denly. Another session that goes to the visiting side. South Africa continue to struggle. Philander has been sent for scans and isn't coming back on the park anytime soon. More and more problems and headaches for Faf du Plessis.

First strike!

Crawley goes and South Africa needed this. Length ball and just shaping away from Pretorius. Asked the opener to play and he poked at that one to get an outside edge. Easy catch for de Kock.

Half-century stand

Crawley and Sibley have done everything right this session. England are now 51 for no loss and the lead is 264. With Philander out, problems mounting for the hosts.

Philander news

He's walked off the field because of a hamstring problem. Now he's also been fined 15 per cent of his match fees for his Buttler send-off yesterday.

ALL OUT

Wood gets five and South Africa have folded 183. He's nipped out de Kock and Dane Paterson in quick succession to make it England's session. There was frustration but there are smiles around now. No follow-on as well.

BIG WICKET

De Kock has been dismissed for 76 off 116 by Mark Wood. He gets bowled by a quick delivery and out go South Africa's hopes as well. The session will now be extended.

Pretorius falls

What a timely wicket for England. Stokes has produced the wicket as Pretorius falls for 37. The 79-run stand has come to and end.

150 up for South Africa ... England's frustration surely must be mounting.

Review

De Kock was given not out and England went for the review. Woakes was the bowler and it was going over the stumps. 50-run stand up as well between de Kock and Pretorius.

So de Kock gets a half-century off 72 balls - his 21st in Tests - and he's now scored 39 for the eighth wicket with Dwaine Pretorius. This stand is doing well to frustrate the visitors.

England have dismissed Philander in the second over of the day. The fullish delivery and it came back just a bit. Philander got a leading edge and Broad completed the catch.

Hello and welcome to the live blog of the third day's play between South Africa and England in the fourth Test. On the second day, England out-batted and then out-bowled South Africa to gain a handy advantage in the game. The hosts will start on 88 for 6 and things are only looking bleak after England posted 400.

Quinton de Kock is unbeaten on 32 and it won't be surprising if he takes the aggressive route early on in the day. Dwaine Pretorius, Vernon Philander, Dane Paterson and Beuran Hendricks will look to bat around him and their first target will be to save the follow-on.
