Day 3, No play:Rain and bad light combine to play spoilsport. The day's play has been officially called off.

Bad News:The second inspection is done and the news isn't one bit encouraging. The light remains dim and it means the players will continue to stay in the dressing / hotel room.The covers are well entrenched and the outfield remains wet.There will be another inspection at 5:15 pm local (9:45 pm IST)

A second inspection:It's still wet at Rose Bowl and the umpires have decided to check out the conditions once again at 4:15 pm local (8:45 PM IST)

Promising signs?The covers are coming off, it's stopped raining. An inspection has been scheduled for 15:30 local time (20:00 IST).

Day 3, Lunch:Nothing positive to report from Southampton, where bad light and rain continue to delay the start of the day's play. Lunch has been taken as per the scheduled time.

Drizzle, delay:There's a steady drizzle and the covers are still on, no improvement on weather front. It's highly unlikely that there'll be any play in the first session.

Update:It's currently dark out there at The Rose Bowl, with the floodlights switched on. There's a bit of a drizzle too. The start of Day 3 has been delayed.

Only 86 overs of play have been possible so far in this Test match, with bad light and rain limiting the number of overs bowled on Day 2 to 40.2. Pakistan, who are 223 for 9, have Mohammad Rizwan to thank for crossing the 200-run mark as the wicketkeeper-batsman came up with a gutsy, unbeaten 60 and batted well with the tail to keep his team afloat. Rizwan needed an innings of this mould to justify his continued selection ahead of Sarfaraz Ahmed, wrote Kritika Naidu.

For England, it was disappointing not able to bowl Pakistan out on Day 2, with the constant interruptions coming as an added frustration. Disappointment and frustration were certainly the overriding emotions of the day given the maddening stoppages for bad light, wrote Rob Johnston, as he summed up the second day's action (or the lack of it). But both Anderson and Broad described conditions as "gloomy" and had sympathy with Michael Gough and Richard Kettleborough, the umpires, who had to take the decision that wouldn't have pleased many people.

The weather forecast for the remaining days doesn't look too good. Let's see how much cricket we get to watch.
