THE ASHES, 2ND TEST, DAY 3

Neither will nor way out for England on dismal day

"We'll need to find a way."

Dawid Malan must have said it nearly a dozen times during his 12-minute-long press conference at the end of Day 3 at the Adelaide Oval. That too in reference to a number of issues that his England team are currently riddled with on this Ashes tour. Whether it is some of their batters' absolute ineptitude in terms of coming to grips with the pace and bounce of the Australian pitches, their tendency to fall in a heap when put under even the slightest of pressure or even his own errors in concentration that let him down just when he looks set for a score of note. And each time, Malan seemed to be saying it more in hope than with any conviction. Maybe it was just the match situation that made it sound that way.

Mitchell Starc had spoken to the press only minutes before Malan in the same room. The two had even crossed paths, resulting in a brief chat that ended with a "well bowled mate" from Malan to Starc. The Australian speedster too mentioned 'finding a way' on a few occasions during his summation of the day's proceedings. But Starc was talking more about how he and his Australian team had actually found ways to continue to be on top of their beleaguered opposition. There was only conviction in what he said. There was no room for hope. On how he's found a way to get the pink ball to move under natural light. On how he found a way to lead an inexperienced attack on a pitch that didn't offer them much to close out another Joe Root-Dawid Malan shaped challenge. On how he and his fellow bowlers found a way to then demolish the rest of the English line-up completely, yet again.

It simply was one of those days again at the Adelaide Oval. A day where the English found many ways and means to get out and let a position of strength wither away on possibly the best batting day of the Test. A day where the Australians kept finding ways to turn their rivals' momentum against themselves and leave them tottering with nowhere to hide.

And to think, Root and Malan had played out the entire first session of play with consummate ease. Like at the Gabba, the classy duo had handled the home team's intensity with the ball with high-quality defence and very selective strokeplay. Root had once again looked like the batter who's dominated this format all year long. Malan had once again looked like the batter whose technique and approach seem custom-made to dominate this format on Australian soil. They had in turn shifted the pressure on to Steve Smith, on his first full day in the field as Test captain in nearly 4 years, and Starc, leading an inexperienced attack for the first time in many years. And the one who would pave the way for Australia was the youngest member of that attack, the ever-improving Cameron Green.

After a maiden Test summer last year, where he battled away to live up to his lofty reputation as a genuine all-rounder, the Western Australian seemed to have found his way with the ball at this level at the Gabba. This was his opportunity to build on it.

Already this season, Green looks a lot smoother, a lot more fluid in his run-up. Less mechanical too, and not like he's concentrating his energies on every step he takes from the time he sets off on his run. As a result, he seems more concerned with what happens at the batter's end than his own. His followthrough is still long but it doesn't just stop like a long, lumbering road train that's put the handbrake on. Instead, it's a more organic finish, one where he seems to be more in control.

He's also consistently quicker and at the batter a lot more. Like he was in a series of a dozen deliveries to Root, as he set about finding a way to find the England captain's elusive outside-edge. He beat it on a few occasions before getting the angle slightly straighter to catch Root's bat with its customary open-face on the bounce. The worst you'll hear from Root when he admonishes himself in the net is a very polite, "Nooo Joseph". Here, he had a few choicer words for himself, and understandably so. Starc replaced Green at the River End and like he'd explain later, decided to take charge of the situation.

Malan had picked three boundaries off the left-armer with the same shot that he fell to. There were two slashes to short deliveries, slightly wide of off-stump, in the first session and he welcomed Starc with another one after the break. Then came the correction in line from the seasoned fast bowler.

This one was closer to him. The angle was a lot sharper. And Malan's attempted cut shot only resulted in him edging a sharp catch to Smith in the slip cordon. The procession had commenced.

Nathan Lyon was wheeling away from the other end of course and like he's done over a 102 Tests now, he gets batters to find ways to get out to him when the pitch isn't offering him much. He teases and tempts and tantalises like he did with Ollie Pope, who survived a catch to short-leg before offering a catch to short-leg in the space of three deliveries. Jos Buttler, meanwhile, looked less keen on finding a way out of his continued worries with length deliveries angling away rather than succumbing to them, meekly too to Starc this time.

The rest of the collapse doesn't even warrant much of a mention. Some might debate Australia's decision to not enforce the follow-on. But maybe Smith's call will lead to Marcus Harris finding a way to score runs as a Test opener, as if Australia haven't ticked enough boxes already in the seven days of cricket we've seen so far during this Ashes series. You won't bet against it, not after another day where eventually for England, there was neither a will nor a way out of their grim predicament.
