India lose Gill early in their second innings

Jonny Bairstow set a slew of records getting to his third straight Test century but his thrill-a-minute 106 was not enough to deny India a substantial first-innings lead. The hosts were bowled out for 284 giving India a lead of 132 which they pushed to 169 for the loss of Shubman Gill by Tea on Day 3.

That India bagged a 100-plus lead despite Bairstow's brilliance was another glowing testament to their pace attack that split the 10 wickets among itself. Mohammed Siraj was expensive but finished with a four-fer while Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami finished with three and two respectively.

The session's story though was Bairstow, who through the course of his knock became the leading run-getter in Tests for the calendar year. More significantly, he became only the second player - after Michael Clarke - to score five hundreds in a year batting at No. 5 or below. He resumed on 91 and a ball into the session was on 95 after a delightful clip past midwicket. The century came soon enough with another four - his 14th - as Ravindra Jadeja overran a ball at sweeper cover. He'd gotten to the hundred off 119 balls having scored only 16 off his first 64.

India started the session poorly conceding 19 off the first 10 balls before Bumrah settled into his spell and beat Bairstow's defence on a couple of occasions. His efforts were cashed in on by the excellent Shami, who replaced him and dismissed the centurion with his first ball of the spell. Bairstow was lured by the fuller length of the ball but he had to reach well outside the off-stump to play the drive and only managed an edge to Virat Kohli at first slip.

The visitors closed in after ending the 92-run seventh-wicket stand. Siraj bounced Stuart Broad out and before Billings dragged a scrambled-seam delivery on to his stumps for a well-made 36. Matthew Potts threw his bat around for 17 before he was nicked off by Siraj with the third umpire unable to overrule the soft-signal on a contentious low catch by Shreyas Iyer.

India were jolted in the first over of their second innings when James Anderson got Shubman Gill nicking to slip but Hanuma Vihari and Cheteshwar Pujara saw through the remainder of that tricky 13-over spell to keep India in front.
