Alana King hat-trick helps Trent Rockets defend 119
Alana King bagged the first-ever hat-trick in the Women's Hundred as she spun Trent Rockets to 43-run victory in a low-scoring encounter at Old Trafford against Manchester Originals on Saturday (August 13). Rockets recovered from a top-order wobble to post 119/5, with Abigail Freeborn scoring an unbeaten 45 off 38. The Originals lost early wickets in the chase and were further rattled when King ran through the middle order, helping the Rockets bowl the opposition out for only 76.
In an excellent spell in which she gave away only two runs in 12 deliveries, Kathryn Bryce also dismissed Emma Lamb for a duck and ended Lizelle Lee's promising innings. King bagged her first wicket by sending Deandra Dottin back for nought. Amy Satterthwaite's watchful outing was ended by Sarah Glenn, leaving the Originals at 37/4. It became 45/7 when King dismissed Cordelia Griffith, Sophie Ecclestone and Kate Cross off successive deliveries, ending up with 4-15 from the 20 deliveries that she bowled. There was not much the Originals' lower order could do as they ended up getting bowled out with 13 deliveries still remaining.
Earlier, having been asked to bat, the Rockets lost Elyse Villani early, while Marie Kelly and Mignon du Preez didn't add much to the scoreboard. Bryony Smith fell after a positive start, leaving the Rockets at 43/4 after 36 deliveries. Freeborn then took over, striking seven fours in a well-paced innings while she received support from Katherine Brunt and King as the Rockets finished with close to 120.

Ellyse Perry (58 off 31) struck the fastest fifty of this edition of The Hundred while Sophie Devine came up with a brisk 48 off 25 and also bagged an important wicket to help Birmingham Phoenix to a 19-run victory against Welsh Fire at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. Having posted 161/5 - the highest total of this Hundred - the Phoenix restricted the Fire to 142/5. Georgia Elwiss played an important role with the ball, picking up 2 for 29 from her 20 deliveries.
A 47-run stand for the opening wicket, which came in 32 balls, laid the platform for the chase as Tammy Beaumont and Hayley Matthews dealt in regular hits to the fence. Legspinner Abtaha Maqsood ended the partnership by dismissing Matthews for 20. Rachael Haynes struck three fours before she got out to Georgia Elwiss. Beaumont and Annabel Sutherland helped their side past the 100 run mark when the latter struck a six off Devine off the 66th ball. But Devine picked up the key wicket of Beaumont while Sutherland was dismissed by Elwiss, with both batters falling in the 30s. It came down to 35 off the last 10 deliveries and Fran Wilson tried to keep her team in the hunt. But her run out - for a 12-ball 20 - was the last of the fight that the Fire produced as they fell short of the target.
Earlier, asked to bat, the Phoenix did not have the best of starts as Claire Nicholas had Evelyn Jones bowled for 1 while Amy Jones scored only 2 before getting out to Alex Hartley. Skipper Devine took charge as she gave the innings momentum by striking 7 fours and two sixes, scoring 35 of the 46 runs that came in partnership with Perry. A fine catch from Hartley gave Katie George a wicket and prevented Devine from getting to half-century. Perry then took over, finding the boundaries regularly and received support from Sophie Molineux in a 82-run fourth wicket association. Perry raced to a 26-ball fifty before the Phoenix lost a couple of wickets. A handy 12 off 7 from Emily Arlott helped her team finish cross 160.
