Ranji Trophy Highlights: Arjun Tendulkar, Jay Gohil score centuries on First Class debut

- Maharashtra were in a lot of trouble when they started Day 2, having been reduced to 80/5 in reply to Delhi's 191, and they were reeling further as they slipped to 94/7. But Azim Kazi and Akshay Palkar came to their rescue as they put on an exceptional 211-run stand for the eighth wicket and both were unbeaten at Stumps, extending the lead to 114. Kazi had scored 119 off 260 deliveries while Palkar struck 94 off 240 as their pair batted for more than 77 overs to stun Delhi.

- Jay Gohil, the 22-year old Saurashtra batter, struck a century on his first-class debut to put his team in a commanding position against Assam in Guwahati. After Chetan Sakariya's five-wicket haul kept Assam to 286, Saurashtra lost Snell Patel early. But a 276-run second-wicket association involving Gohil (177*) and Harvik Desai (108) powered Saurashtra into the lead. They ended the second day's play at 313/3, leading by 27.

- Suyash Prabhudessai struck his maiden double hundred to help Goa close in on the 500-run mark against Rajasthan in Porvorim. Prabhudessai, who was 81 not out at the end of Day 2, received support from Arjun Tendulkar who scored a first-class hundred on debut to emulate his father Sachin. They put on 221 for the sixth wicket before Arjun (120) was caught and bowled off Kamlesh Nagarkoti. Goa ended the day at 493/8.

- A rearguard action powered Odisha to 457 against Baroda in Cuttack after they started the day at 214/5. Abhishek Raut struck 70 but Odisha lost a few wickets and slipped to 285/8. Debabrata Pradhan (89) and Subham Nayak (82) came up with career-best knocks as they put on 161 for the ninth wicket to help their side post a good total. Baroda were 77/0 at Stumps.

- Akshay Chandran's maiden 150 ensured Kerala finished with a good total after they started the day at 276/6 against Jharkhand in Ranchi. Akshay was involved in a 171-run seventh wicket stand with Sijomon Joseph (83) as Kerala posted 475. Jharkhand lost regular wickets in their reply as they ended the day at 87/3, trailing by 388.

- Mickil Jaiswal took over from Tanmay Agarwal after the Hyderabad captain was dismissed for 135, as the No.7 registered his maiden first-class ton (137 not out) to help the hosts finish with 395 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal. Tamil Nadu's openers led the reply with an unbroken 203-run stand as Narayan Jagadeesan finished Day 2 on 116* with Sai Sudharsan 87* also batting well.

- An unbeaten 116 from Arman Jaffer helped Mumbai gain the first innings lead against Andhra in Vizianagaram. Mumbai, who were 25/1 at the start of the day in reply to Andhra's 238, saw Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ajinkya Rahane and Tanush Kotian score 40s. But Jaffer was the constant presence through the day as he forged important partnerships to help Mumbai end the day at 290/6, leading by 52.

- BR Sharath's 77 and Krishnappa Gowtham's 48 came to Karnataka's rescue after they had slipped to 140/6 at the end of the opening day. Sharath and Gowtham added 90 for the seventh wicket, and along with a useful 26 from Ronit More, Karnataka posted 304. Vidwath Kaverappa led the attack with the ball as he bagged three of the four wickets to fall, leaving Services at 96/4 at Stumps on Day 2 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

- Mandeep Singh joined the list of centurions for Punjab against Chandigarh, scoring an unbeaten 128 while Anmolpreet Singh scored 86 as Punjab declared at 586/4 in Mohali. Chandigarh lost a couple of wickets and were 62/2 at Stumps, trailing by 524.

- Shrikant Mundhe scored an unbeaten 109 and was involved in useful partnerships with Yugandhar Singh (73) and Rongsen Jonathan (40) to help Nagaland close in on a lead against Uttarakhand. - Adhiraj Johri's 118, along with half-centuries from Yashasvi Rishav, Sakibul Gani and Sachin Kumar helped Bihar gain a healthy lead against Arunachal Pradesh in Patna. In reply to Arunachal's 212, Bihar ended the day at 367/4, leading by 155.

Top spells

- As many as 21 wickets went down on Day 2 at the Hostel Ground JKCA in Jammu as Madhya Pradesh closed in on an innings victory against Jammu and Kashmir. Madhya Pradesh, who started the day at 251/6, finished with 308 in their first innings, with Aqib Nabi bagging a four-wicket haul. Jammu and Kashmir innings was dismantled quickly by Avesh Khan (5-33) and Saransh Jain (4-22) as they were bowled out for 98. Asked to follow on, they slipped to 54/7 as Avesh did the damage again, picking up 3-16 in the second innings.

- After a 14-wicket Day 1 at the Eden Gardens, 10 wickets fell on Day 2 as Shivam Mavi ensured Bengal fell short of Uttar Pradesh's first-innings total. Mavi, who had picked up three wickets on the opening day, added three more to bag a career-best 6 for 55 as Bengal were bowled out for 169 to concede a 29-run lead. Ishan Porel, who picked up a fifer for Bengal in the first essay, continued picking up wickets as he bagged a couple to leave UP at 40/4 at one stage. Unbeaten 40s from Rinku Singh and Akshdeep Nath, however, led UP's recovery as the ended the day at 122/4, leading by 151.

- Although Karn Sharma's 8-38 had given Railways a huge advantage on Day 1, when they bowled out Vidarbha for 213, they let that advantage slip as their batters failed to come to the party. Vivek Singh scored a fighting 81 but he did not receive any support from the rest as Railways were bowled out for 161, with Aditya Sarwate and Akshay Wakhare bagging five-wicket hauls. Faiz Fazal, who scored a century in the first innings, did well with the bat again as his 82* helped Vidarbha end the day at 161/2, leading by 213.

- Ajay Mandal's seven-wicket haul ensured a quick end to Puducherry's innings as they were bowled out for 37 in reply to Chhattisgarh's 162. Sagar Udeshi also bagged a seven-wicket haul, but half-centuries from Harpreet Singh and Shashank Singh helped Chhattisgarh post 184 in their second innings, leaving Puducherry with a target of 310. Puducherry, however, slipped with the bat again as they were reduced to 96/5 at Stumps on a 23-wicket day at the Cricket Association Puducherry Ground.
