Baby steps the way to go for Milla and Travis Head

On Tuesday (October 17), Milla Head took her first steps. And Travis Head was home to witness his baby daughter walk for the first time. One-year-old Milla couldn't have timed it better. It was two days before her doting dad's departure to India for the World Cup.

In an ideal scenario, from an Australian cricket perspective anyway, Head would have been in the subcontinent already, as part of the 15-member squad for the World Cup. Instead, he had to stay back home as part of his recovery from the fracture he sustained on his left hand while batting in South Africa last month. And while the South Australian opener was missed by the Australian team, especially during their stuttering start to their campaign in India, he's understandably pleased as any father would be that he didn't miss a significant milestone in his young child's life.

Head arrived in Delhi on Friday evening and had his first net on Saturday (October 21), around the time the rest of the Australian team landed in the city following their comprehensive victory against Pakistan in Bengaluru. The 29-year-old though didn't shy away from acknowledging the significance of having got some family time in a year where he's been away for long periods. Even though he's been clued into the television every time the Aussies have taken the field.

"I watched bits and pieces. Watched the first half of the game then went to sleep. A little one at home and prioritizing a little bit home time," he said on Sunday.

"There are always positives that come out of some of these things (the injury break) and this has been a very busy year. It's always nice to spend some time with the girls at home, I'm always going to take that, and I prioritize that. I had a very, very enjoyable four weeks. No doubt there are some frustrations obviously being injured at home but take the positive out of it," he added.

Head has been a revelation for Australia in 50-over cricket at the top of the order since returning to the ODI setup last year. But he had the inopportune break enforced on him, quite literally, after being struck by a short delivery from Gerard Coetzee at Centurion during the tour of South Africa. The left-hander was forced to don a protective splint for nearly four weeks before finally returning to the nets a week earlier in Adelaide, where he faced a lot of throwdowns. But dodging surgery was the biggest relief for both Head and the Australian camp, as he revealed on Sunday. And he's already feeling optimistic about his chances of having an impact during the World Cup.

"I had a really good hit yesterday. I think each session is getting better but again, got to be mindful of the fact that I got told that six-week mark and everything seems to be going well. But again, it's how I wake up this morning. It's how I can potentially back up tomorrow and train and there's still a few things I need to tick off. But I'm optimistic. We'll see what happens, so if it continues on at this rate, who knows, and I'll keep doing the things day-by-day to hopefully give myself the best chance," he said.

"Basically, I had four weeks in a splint. So, the major issues with it at the moment is having four weeks doing nothing then to mobilise it again, so I've had a bit of stiffness and what not, but just trying to work that out and just started by hitting tennis balls. I faced full sidearms yesterday and a little bit of bowling, so hopefully I face bowlers tomorrow (Monday). It seems to be going on track. But you have good days and bad days with it all so again just staying level with it all and taking each day as it comes at the minutes."

Head also didn't rule out the possibility completely of playing in Australia's next match against the Netherlands in Delhi, even if it is unlikely at this stage.

"Day off today, I'll see the physio later today and sort of see where we're at. It feels a lot better than it did last week after a hit. Today it feels pretty good. There's obviously some stiffness here but feels pretty good. So, I think the aim will be challenging guys to try to be in the nets in the training session tomorrow. Try to get into that full session and see where we get to. I could bat for a whole session against quicks and spin and feel a million bucks, I could hit the first ball and not feel great," he said.

Head did admit going through a range of emotions post the first few days following the injury and did fear at one stage about missing out on the World Cup altogether.

"Thought there was a chance, obviously mixed emotions at the time when you go through it day-by-day. When it first happened, I thought my chances were done but as those three or four days played out and I got back to Sydney and specialist and what not, there was definitely light at the end of the tunnel to potentially get back if all went well and everything seems at the moment to be going well."

Asked if he would need to overcome any psychological aspects of his recovery, Head insisted, "I've no doubt there will be a little bit but I don't think I've been someone over my whole career to worry too much about head noise. The sessions I've had so far, confidence has come back pretty well as I've got confidence in obviously the medical staff as well and to be told that the bones are healed. The stiffness and some of the pain, you can deal with it as long as I'm not doing any damage to it."

"Once you get in the game and as long as I'm competing and switched on and the mind space is in the right space, that stuff will take care of itself."

Head has averaged 60.10 at a strike-rate of 116.24 in 13 matches with a highest score of 152 since returning to the team last year. He's also hit 16 sixes in that time but he's not overly concerned with losing too much power with his hitting as he recovers from the injured bottom hand.

"Four weeks in a splint, it's a little bit skinny. I've never been a big boy but it's definitely a little bit skinny. Four weeks in a splint I've probably lost a little bit (of power) and I think that comes back with confidence and hitting and that should come back pretty quickly. I don't hit massive sixes anyway, so maybe I've just got to keep it on the carpet a little bit more but I'm not too fazed by it," he explained.

From all reports in Adelaide, Milla is now making the most of her new-found skills, and is running herself and everyone else around her ragged. For now, her father continues to take baby steps back towards regaining his place in the Australian top-order. And it's only a matter of time before Travis Head hits the ground running in a World Cup campaign that's getting better by the day for the Australians.
