IPL introduces match fee for players

Players in the IPL will be paid a match fee going forward in addition to their contracted amount, BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed. For each game, a player will receive INR 7.5 lakh, which would amount to INR 1.05 Cr if the player plays every single league game.

"In a historic move to celebrate consistency and champion outstanding performances in the #IPL, we are thrilled to introduce a match fee of INR 7.5 lakhs per game for our cricketers," Jay Shah said in a social media post. "A cricketer playing all league matches in a season will get Rs. 1.05 crores in addition to his contracted amount. Each franchise will allocate INR 12.60 crores as match fees for the season! This is a new era for the #IPL and our players!"

The decision was immediately welcomed by Lalit Modi, the former chairman of the IPL. "Jay Shah's move to introduce a match fee is an excellent decision that will benefit the players,"' Modi told Cricbuzz.

"With this change, the total match fee for an IPL player will surpass the earnings of players participating in other global leagues, such as the CPL, BBL, PSL, The Hundred, SA20, and ILT20. However, I feel the salary should be paid by the BCCI, rather than making it a liability for the franchises. I also hope the BCCI extends similar benefits to women and domestic cricketers," Modi said.
