Stats highlights from an exciting day of Test cricket in Kanpur where India forced the Test ahead after two washed out days of play.

1 India became the first team to reach 50 runs in an innings inside the first three overs - off just 2.6 overs in this case - eclipsing the previous record off 4.2 overs by England which they achieved twice in the recent Test series against West Indies. India also broke the record for the quickest to 100 (10.1 overs), 150 (18.2 overs), 200 (24.2 overs), and 250 (30.1 overs) by a team.

Fastest to the milestone

200 24.2 28.1 Aus vs Pak 2017

96 sixes smashed by India in 2024 is the most maximums by a team in a calendar year in Test cricket surpassing 89 by England in 2022 with 87 sixes by India in 2021 sitting in the third slot. India have possibly the second innings of the ongoing Kanpur Test and another seven to follow in the reminder of the year to add to the tally.

Most sixes by a team in a calendar year

Sixes Year Team Tests Balls/six
96 2024 India 8 71.2
89 2022 England 15 133.8
87 2021 India 14 161.4
81 2014 New Zealand 9 126.1
71 2013 New Zealand 12 151.7

8.22 India's scoring rate in their batting innings - the highest ever achieved by a team in an innings where they scored 200 or more. The previous highest was Australia's 7.53 (241/2 dec in 32 overs) against Pakistan in Sydney in 2017 while the highest achieved previously by a team in their first innings was South Africa's 6.80 (340/3 dec in 50 overs) against Zimbabwe in Cape Town in 2005.

14.34 Partnership scoring rate in the opening stand between Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal (55 runs off 23 balls) - the highest ever in a 50+ stand in Tests, where fall of wickets data is available. They surpassed 11.86 between Ben Stokes and Ben Duckett against West Indies in Edgbaston a few months back when they hit an unbeaten 87 from 44 balls for the opening wicket.

2 This was the second instance of two batters reaching 50 in 35 balls or fewer in the same innings (where recorded) - Jaiswal in 31 balls and KL Rahul in 33 balls. The previous instance also belonged to India, against West Indies in Port of Spain last year with Rohit Sharma (35 balls) and Ishan Kishan (33 balls) being the protagonists on that occasion. Jaiswal's 31-ball effort is the second quickest by an Indian batter on home soil behind Rishabh Pant's 26-ball half-century against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru in 2022.

437 runs scored in the day's play by both teams combined is the second most in a day's play on Indian soil after 470 in the second day's play between India and Sri Lanka at the Brabourne Stadium in 2009. 437 also happens to be the most in a day's play in a Test in Asia on the scheduled fourth day or beyond of a Test. 18 wickets have also fallen in the day's play making it the most to fall on a day where 400 or more runs were aggregated.

7 Ravindra Jadeja became the seventh Indian bowler to get to the milestone of 300 Test wickets for India. At 35 years & 299 days, Jadeja is the oldest among the seven at the time of reaching the milestone while at 17428 deliveries he is the second quickest behind R Ashwin (15636 balls).

74 Tests taken by Jadeja is the second fastest to the double of 3000+ runs and 300+ wickets behind Ian Botham who needed two fewer Tests. He is the 11th player overall and third Indian after Kapil Dev and R Ashwin to do the double and of the 11 players his batting-bowling average differential of 12.39 is only bettered by Imran Khan (14.88).
