Brook marches into record books with second-fastest triple ton in Tests

England piled on records against Pakistan on the fourth day of the opening Test in Multan. The Yorkshire duo of Harry Brook (317) and Joe Root (262) were at the forefront of England's mammoth total of 823/7 declared. Here's a recap of the major milestones from the day.

Brook enters history books

6 England batters to score triple centuries in Test cricket, Brook being the sixth and the first since Graham Gooch in 1990. 317 is the fifth-highest individual score for England in Tests and the fourth-highest knock against Pakistan.

Highest individual score for England in Tests

310 balls taken by Brook to reach 300 makes it the second fastest triple century only behind Virender Sehwag's 278-ball effort against South Africa in Chennai. He took 118 balls for his first block of 100 runs, 127 for the next 100 runs and just 65 balls to race from 200 to 300.

5 Brook became the fifth player to score a triple century batting at #5 or below. The only player to score more was Michael Clarke who made an unbeaten 329 against India in Sydney in 2012. The previous highest for an England player batting #5 or lower was Regie "Tip" Foster's 287 on debut against Australia in 1903.

Root - Brook record partnership

454 The stand of 454 is the fourth-highest partnership for any wicket in Tests; the highest ever for the fourth wicket or lower; the highest for England and the highest against Pakistan for any wicket. The only other pair to register a 400+ stand for England in Tests was Peter May and Colin Cowdrey who put together 411 against West Indies in Edgbaston in 1957.

3 Instances of two batters scoring 250+ runs in the same innings. Gary Sobers (365*) and Conard Hunte (260) against Pakistan in Kingston in 1958 was the first pair to do so which was emulated 48 years later in 2006 at Colombo SSC by Mahela Jayawardene (374) and Kumar Sangakkara (287) against South Africa.

2 Root and Brook are the second English pair to hit double centuries in the same innings after Graeme Fowler (201) and Mike Gatting (207) against India in Chennai in 1985.

5 Countries in which Root scored a double hundred - only Kumar Sangakkara and Younis Khan have scored in more host nations with six each while Brian Lara also have scored in five separate host nations. Root also became the first non-Asian player to score double centuries in each of India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.

25.95 Percentage of runs Root scored in boundaries - he hit 17 fours in a total of 262. In those innings for which boundary hit details are available, Root's % of 25.95 is the second lowest for any player to score 200+. The only one with a lower boundary share being Grant Flower who hit 50 runs of his unbeaten 201 (11 x 4s & 1 x 6s) against Pakistan in Harare in 1995.

4 Instances of a team putting up 800+ totals. The first two of those were timeless Tests and the last such instance came when Sri Lanka scored 952/6 against India in Colombo RPS in 1997.

The highest total for England remains 903/7 against Australia at the Oval in 1938 while the previous highest against Pakistan was 790/3 declared by West Indies in Kingston in 1958.

267 The lead of 267 conceded by Pakistan is the second-highest by a team after scoring 500+ in their first innings. The only side to concede more was India in Colombo RPS in 1997 when Sri Lanka responded with 952/6 dec. to their 537/8 dec. - a first innings lead of 415.
