No lack of motivation against Bangladesh: Ronchi

New Zealand have made the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup quarter-finals with five wins in a row and play their final league match against fellow quarter-finalists Bangladesh at Seddon Park on Thursday, but Luke Ronchi is certain that there will be no need for extra motivation.

"It's a World Cup and you're playing for your country. If you need more motivation than that, you probably shouldn't be here," he told reporters after training on a hot afternoon. "It's international cricket. Even minnow teams do well. Guys are capable of doing all sorts of things. If we're not on our game we will get hurt, so hopefully we go out there with the same mindset we've had and play well against them."

Bangladesh's victory over England sealed their passage to the knock-out stage of a World Cup for the first time, and Ronchi was not surprised by their success in Adelaide. "It's a good win, they've been playing some good cricket. They've only lost one game so far, they've been consistent, winning games. We have to be on our money to beat them. Everyone will be up for it," he said.

Ronchi's role in his first World Cup has been primarily that of wicketkeeper - he has eight dismissals - because the opportunity to bat has not come regularly. He has batted thrice, scoring a brisk 29 in the World Cup opener to help New Zealand to 331, followed by contributions of 12 in the narrow in over Scotland and 6 in the nail-biter against Australia. Keeping wickets to the best bowing attack of the World Cup was "awesome" for Ronchi.

"Every game, every bowler seems to be doing particularly well. It's not one guy carrying everyone. It's been awesome to stand behind the guys, swinging the ball, working up pace. You can see guys wanting to bowl sides out, we haven't left any job unfinished," he said. "The consistency and self belief has grown more and more. Tim [Southee] and Trent [Boult] are Test and one-day bowlers both, they work quite well together and know what each other does. A few more games to go, hopefully we'll keep getting better."

Apart from three quick bowlers, Ronchi keeps wicket to the crafty Daniel Vettori, whose left-arm spin has fetched him 12 wickets at 11.33 with an outstanding economy rate of 3.00. That would seem a difficult ask of a 33-year-old wicketkeeper, but Ronchi was quick to point out that Vettori's lack of spin helped him. "Dan doesn't turn it as much now as he used to, which is a good thing for me," he said. "I don't have to worry about it quite so much. It's just good fun. Always hard work keeping to any spinner, but to be in a position where you can see what a batsman is trying to do, how he's trying to work Dan out, is cool. I've got the best seat in the house, really."

As for the lack of batting opportunities, Ronchi's reply was to the point: "That's a good thing. If I'm not batting, that means we're doing really well. So I'm not complaining at all."

In all probability, New Zealand will face West Indies on March 21 in Wellington. New Zealand have a long gap after the Bangladesh game, but according to Ronchi they would not find it difficult to stay focused. "We've got big gaps between the games, the quarter-final is a week and a half away, so you don't want to get too far ahead of yourself. That's a good thing," he said. "And outside of our cricket, we are all pretty relaxed. We don't think too much about it. It will obviously be a massive game for us, a knock-out stage, and that's where you have to be on because if you lose, it's all over."
