James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow rise in ICC player rankings

James Anderson, England's front-line pacer, has returned to the top-three of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings after his stellar show in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Headingley. The swing bowler ended with astonishing match figures of 10 for 45 (5 for 16 and 5 for 29 in the two innings respectively) as England crushed the visitors by a massive innings and 88 runs margin to take 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

This was Anderson's first ever 10-wicket haul at Headingley and his third overall, helping him leapfrog past Pakistan's Yasir Shah and South Africa's Dale Steyn to No. 3 in the rankings chart. The Lancashire pacer earned a whopping 49 points for his efforts, putting him on career-best 854 points.

Meanwhile, Stuart Broad, Anderson's fellow teammate, retained his No. 1 spot, ahead of India's Ravichandran Ashwin. Broad has 872 points, one more than Ashwin's tally of 871. Moeen Ali moved one place up to 25th, Shaminda Eranga is placed at 35 while Dasun Shanuka, who took three wickets on debut, entered the rankings chart at the 86th position.

James Bairstow, England's wicket-keeper batsman, was a significant gainer in the rankings for batsmen. His match-turning knock of 140 that helped the hosts recover from a wobbly 83 for 5 to a healthy 298. It was his second Test hundred and first in home conditions. The knock earned him 84 rating points to move 14 places up to the 22nd slot. Opener Alex Hales, who made a fighting 86, was another big gainer - moving 38 places up to 81st position.

Kusal Mendis, who made a useful fifty in Sri Lanka's second dig gained 13 places to be placed at 60th spot while Lahiru Thirimanne moved nine places up to 67th.

Steven Smith continues to be at the top of the ladder with a 49-point advantage over the next-best - England's Joe Root.

The ICC rankings will be updated once again at the conclusion of the second Test in Durham.
