NEW ZEALAND TOUR OF SOUTH AFRICA, 2016

South Africa retain control despite batting collapse

If the crowd at the SuperSport Park was sparse in the weekend, it became close to negligible on Monday (August 29), even as the sky was clear and South Africa were in command. The warmth came late for the visitors in the match. After eight sessions on the backfoot, New Zealand tasted a period of dominance in the contest during the final session on Day 3 of the second Test, which happens to be the series-decider.

However, having conceded a 267-run lead in the first innings, a mammoth task lies for the Kane Williamson-led side as the hosts, who opted against enforcing the follow-on, are currently ahead by 372 runs in their second innings, with four wickets in hand.

Pacers Tim Southee and Trent Boult, operating with the new ball, came to the party after Quinton de Kock began his innings on fifth gear, slamming his first four deliveries for boundaries. However, Boult, who was at the receiving end of the wicketkeeper-batsman's blitz in his first over, managed to trap Stephan Cook plumb in front of the wicket in his second over with a ball that nipped back in after pitching.

Southee, bowling from the other end, aggravated the situation for South Africa by bowling a double-wicket maiden next up. After Hashim Amla poked at a delivery that swung away after pitching to give an easy catch to Martin Guptill at slips, Southee followed it up to strike JP Duminy's pads with a delivery that straightened after pitching.

De Kock consolidated the South African innings for a while with skipper Faf du Plessis, before the latter ended up hanging his bat outside the off-stump to an innocuous angled-across delivery by Boult. The batsman, who had superbly judged the line in the first innings, ended up offering an easy catch to Ross Taylor.

Even as the other batsmen had trouble against the swinging deliveries, de Kock moved along quickly to become the fourth wicketkeeper-opener to slam twin half centuries in a Test. However, his end came soon after when he couldn't sway away from a nasty bouncer by Doug Bracewell. He ended up getting an edge as the ball blobbed up to Kane Williamson at slip.

New Zealand continued with their barrage of short-pitched deliveries from thereon, but without much success as Temba Bavuma and Stiaan van Zyl were evading it comfortably. Beyond a point, the short-pitched deliveries became more of a test for the wicketkeeper rather than the batsmen. As it turned out, eventually, it was a good length ball outside the off-stump by Wagner that brought about the sixth wicket of the South African innings as van Zyl ended up poking at it to hand the keeper a catch, leaving the hosts reeling at 98 for 6 in the second innings. Bavuma and Vernon Philander saw them safely through to stumps as South Africa ended the third day on 105 for 6.

The morning session of Day 3 was merely an extension of how things had gone for the touring party in the last session of Sunday. They were being treated to Dale Steyn's bouncers and Vernon Philander's swing bowling in the first hour. Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls, resuming New Zealand's innings on the overnight score 38 for 3, dabbled between caution and audacity.

The left-hander went through periods where he took on Steyn. In the third over of the morning he kept playing the cut shot for deliveries bowled short and wide. It did fetch him three boundaries, but they weren't devoid of half chances. Faf du Plessis managed to get a hand to the first one, but failed to hold on to it at second slip. The second shot was cut clean through the backward point region. The third one flew over the three-man slip cordon.

The duo survived the first hour of play to bring up a half century stand, when Nicholls clipped a full length delivery by Kagiso Rabada through the leg side for a boundary. The 21-year old pacer bowled at speeds in excess of 145kmph to keep the batsmen on the back foot.

Soon after drinks in the opening session, the 60-run fourth-wicket stand came to an end when Rabada trapped Nicholls in front of the stumps. the batsman was declared not out by the on-field umpire, before South Africa decided to go in with a review. There was nothing to help the batsman's case as he had to head back to the pavilion.

South Africa went for a review again soon after Nicholls departure. This time BJ Watling was the batsman in question. As replays showed, he had gloved a Steyn bouncer down the leg side to the wicketkeeper. Yet again, the hosts were successful and paved way to a collapse.

Philander, who came on from the other end cleaned up Mitchell Santner for a duck as New Zealand went to Lunch at 118 for 6.

Even after the break what remained constant was Williamson witnessing a procession of his players back to the pavilion. Drama began early in the second session on Monday (August 29). Vernon Philander hit Bracewell on the pad off the first ball and went up in appeal for leg-before. Meanwhile, Williamson called Bracewell for a single before sending him back, and the batsman was safely inside the crease even as South Africa tried to run him out after the leg-before appeal did not materialise. South Africa skipper du Plessis decided to opt for the review, but Bracewell managed to survive.

Nonetheless, his stay at the crease wasn't to last long as Rabada trapped him cleanly in the seventh over after Lunch. Bracewell thought about taking a review, but decided against it after consulting his captain. Tim Southee's blitz was also brief and studded with quintessential tail-ender slogs. One ball went straight back to Rabada, who dropped it on his follow through. His innings eventually came to an end when he tried to play a cut off Dane Piedt's offspin, but ended up getting an outside edge to de Kock.

Williamson, meanwhile, worked his way to a gritty half century, reaching the landmark with a clip over the mid-wicket region for a boundary. Along with Neil Wagner, Williamson added some much-needed runs in New Zealand's pursuit to avoid a follow on. The 45-run partnership was largely aided by the tail-ender's breezy knock.

After ducking under some pacy bouncers from Rabada, Wagner went after Steyn's short-pitched deliveries. Three consecutive deliveries in the 56th over were pulled towards the cow corner, resulting in a four, a six and a four respectively. After failing to connect the next ball, he managed to pull the last ball of the over for another boundary - this time through the square leg region.

To keep the counter-attack going, Williamson too accelerated with a few exquisite boundaries. When the big runs weren't coming, the New Zealand skipper ensured that the strike was being rotated. However, Wagner's innings came to an end when he top-edged a pull off Steyn to the wicketkeeper in the 58th over. Williamson, who had been a constant figure at the non-striker's end, followed Wagner back to the pavilion four balls later as New Zealand folded up their first innings on 214 and conceded a 267-run lead.

Brief scores: South Africa 481 for 6 (Faf du Plessis 112*, JP Duminy 88, Quinton de Kock 82, Hashim Amla 58, Stephen Cook 56; Neil Wagner 5-86) and 105 for 6 (Quinton de Kock 50; Tim Southee 2-27, Trent Boult 2-38) lead New Zealand 214 (Kane Williamson 77; Kagiso Rabada 3-61, Dale Steyn 3-66, ) by 372 runs.
