Shakib-Mahmudullah duet pulls off Bangladesh's stunning heist

If it was youth that did the job with the ball, experience showed it can be an equally dependable entity for Bangladesh as they rewrote the record books with a stunning fightback.

Mosaddek Hossain starred with the ball for the underdogs, taking three for 13 while bowling at the death to restrict New Zealand to 265 in their 50 overs. In reply, Bangladesh found themselves staring down the barrel at 33/4 - Trent Boult, Adam Milne and Tim Southee combining to run riot. In Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah, Bangladesh found their heroes for the cause. The experienced pair smashed the record for Bangladesh's highest ever partnership as they turned the tables on their more fancied opponents and kept their hopes of going through to the last-four alive. They went on to celebrate the achievement with their respective hundreds and seal a famous five-wicket win. Their progress into the next stage depends on the outcome of the England-Australia game. A win for England will mean Bangladesh are through as the second-placed team.

For the first time in the Champions Trophy 2017, the pacers were able to swing the ball. Boult and Southee enjoyed the conditions and left Bangladesh in complete disarray. Tamim Iqbal's superb form came to a screeching halt as he was out LBW for a second ball duck. Sabbir Rahman followed for 9, while Soumya Sarkar made just 3 in 13. When Mushfiqur Rahim's knock came to an end for 14 off 34, New Zealand were well and truly on top.

There were not too many top class batsmen to follow, and the onus fell on Shakib and Mahmudullah. They needed to script an epic, and an epic they scripted.

The duo took their time, and shunned the risks. Shakib dropped anchor, while Mahmudullah took the odd risk to keep the run rate abreast with what was needed. Their patience and application also flustered the usually unflustered New Zealand team. Kane Williamson threw in James Neesham after the superb spells of Southee, Boult and Milne, and Bangladesh sensed their opportunity. Three overs for 23 runs meant Bangladesh had some wind in their sails. They never let go of that advantage.

10 snowballed into 20, and into 50 and then much more quickly into 100 and 200 - the first ever in Bangladesh's ODI history. Suddenly, Bangladesh were cruising towards the target. As Bangladesh put up a meticulous performance, New Zealand's slowly started to come apart. The duo took minimal risk against Mitchell Santner, but Williamson, Neesham and Corey Anderson were taken to the cleaners. Their combined 9 overs cost the team 68 runs, and allowed Bangladesh to not take too many risks against the more in-form bowlers.

As the duo closed in on their hundreds, the batsmen's approach reversed. Shakib threw caution to the wind, while Mahmudullah was more constrained. The left-hander top edged a six to bring up his seventh ODI hundred, while Mahmudullah hooked a four towards the very end to get to his. It was the perfect way to wrap up a historic match for Bangladesh.

Earlier, New Zealand followed what has been the trend of Champions Trophy 2017 so far - solid starts, middle order collapses and lukewarm finishes. They further emphasised that as they suffered another second half capitulation to be restricted to 265 for 8 after electing to bat first against Bangladesh.

New Zealand have relied heavily on Williamson to provide them with the runs, and while the captain has done well for his side, the team has failed to rally around and ensure his good work doesn't go to waste. For the third match in a row, the Kiwis failed to build on some fine batting from their captain, who made a fighting fifty.

Bangladesh must be commended for some brave decision-making and better execution. With New Zealand setting themselves for a strong finish, Bangladesh introduced Mosaddek in the 42nd over. The move turned out to be a master stroke, with the spinner claiming three big wickets - Neil Broom, Corey Anderson and Neesham - to not only rob New Zealand of their momentum, but also of their chance to put up a big total on the board.

Mosaddek's three overs gave Bangladesh three wickets for only 13 runs, and he was at the forefront of a superb bolwing effort from Bangladesh. He ended with Bangladesh's best bowling figures in Champions Trophy history.

On a pitch that wasn't the best to bat on, Bangladesh had their plans intact. Taskin Ahmed reaped the rewards for some tight opening bowling from Mashrafe Mortaza and Mustafizur Rahman. Taskin ended with the wickets of Luke Ronchi and Ross Taylor.

Taylor was involved in a 83-run stand alongside Williamson, an alliance that had given New Zealand hopes of finishing with a total close to 300. The wicket of Willaimson came against the run of play, when he was run out after making a 69-ball 53. Neil Broom looked good during his brief stay, helping add 49 runs at a decent pace with Taylor.

Taylor departed after making a fine 63 off 82 balls, but New Zealand lost their way after that. They made only 62 in the last 10 overs and lost four wickets in the process to give Bangladesh a way back into the game. And they seized the chance with both hands.
