Priest, Kasperek star as New Zealand cruise to easy win

Windies, a side which retained its core from the team that enjoyed a run to the final of the previous edition of the World Cup, are unlikely to repeat the feat in 2017. On Thursday (July 6), like on most other days of the 2017 Women's World Cup, they produced a meek batting display and followed that up with an equally insipid bowling show to gift wrap New Zealand their second victory of the tournament.

Coming into the match with only one win from three games, the eight-wicket win at The Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton has given New Zealand's campaign a massive boost.

Suzie Bates, New Zealand skipper, won the toss and elected to field. Windies, right from the start, found it difficult to give their innings any momentum. Pacer Lea Tahuhu struck twice to dismiss both the openers - Hayley Matthews and Kycia Knight - inside the fifth over, with only 10 runs on the board. While Tahuhu was striking from one end, Leigh Kasperek kept things tight from the other.

The 25-year-old offbreak bowler remained the most impressive bowler of the day as she kept the batters quiet. She kept tossing the ball up and invited the batters to go after her. But the tight lines and length kept the batters on the back foot and allowed her to sneak in six maiden overs.

There were only two noteworthy stands over the course of the Windies innings - neither yielding more than 43 runs. First, it was skipper Stafanie Taylor and Chedean Nation, who consolidated the innings after the early departure of the openers. The stand, which was slowly gaining momentum, came to an end in the 17th over when Kasperek got the ball to dip in front of Taylor, who missed the flight and was caught plumb in front. One wicket led to another as Deandra Dottin offered a straight forward catch to the offbreak bowler off the next ball to leave her on a hat-trick.

Nation, who had steadied herself well, fell soon after to Amelia Kerr. The legspinner, continued her impressive run, by teasing the batter to play straight to short mid wicket and leave Windies reeling at 53 for 5, with no runs being added for the last three wickets.

It was at this point that the experienced duo of Merissa Aguilleira and Kyshona Knight combined forces in the middle. They braced through a testing spell from the spinners - Kasperek and Kerr - before collecting the runs. Aguilleira, the wicketkeeper-batter playing her 100th ODI, ensured that poor deliveries weren't let off as she dispatched a rare poor delivery - a full toss - from Kasperek for a six over the deep mid wicket fence. But she found herself back in the hut off the next ball to a horrendous umpiring decision.

Teased and beaten by a delivery outside off, Rachel Priest whipped off the bails, but Aguilleira had her foot way behind the line. With no third umpire to save Hasan Raza, and no DRS to Aguilleira's rescue, Windies saw their sixth member down rather unfortunately. Her slow walk back to the pavilion was enough evidence of the disappointment.

Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals from thereon. Daley's 18-ball stay didn't yield any run and Afy Fletcher could add only 23 to her credit, despite farming the strike beautifully. But with limited support from the other end, the No 9 couldn't help Windies score any more than 150. Tahuhu bagged her third wicket, and the last of the Windies innings, when she had Anisa Mohammad trapped legbefore to a yorker from round the wicket.

If bundling out Windies for 150 seemed like an easy task, the chase was a cruise for New Zealand, who were in desperate need of positive results following a rain-abandoned encounter against South Africa and a defeat against Australia. They needed only 110 balls to overhaul Windies' total.

While Suzie Bates launched a calculated attack, wicketkeeper-batter Priest took on the bowling without any inhibitions. Even the spin-heavy attack could do little to keep the pace of the innings slow early on. The 50 was up in the eighth over, and the 100 even sooner - in the 13th. The chase which started off on fifth gear, never hit the speed-break.

Windies used as many as seven bowlers, but to little avail. Priest fell on a 55-ball 90, but with 120 runs wiped off the deficit within the first 15 overs, it meant that Windies had no chance of making a comeback. The wicketkeeper-bat slammed 17 boundaries and two hits over the fence in an hour of entertaining cricket.

There was a brief blip in the chase when Sophie Devine followed Priest back to the pavilion two balls later. Nonetheless, the scare was too little for any real threat. Bates carried on the charge and slapped a couple of more boundaries in the next over to reach closer to the total. She remained unbeaten on 40 off 43 deliveries to take New Zealand to an eight-wicket win.

The manner in which New Zealand went about their business would help restore some confidence in the squad which has played well and remains one of the major contenders to stop Australia's reign. While the win has helped them draw level with South Africa on points - 5 from 4 matches, the Net Run Rate was also boosted massively and helped them enter the top four.

While New Zealand's next game should be relatively easy - against Pakistan, the last two encounters remain tricky - against hosts England and the unbeaten Indian side. Windies, on the other hand, with no wins in four matches, are left with only a slim chance of qualifying for the next round. In order to finish in the top four, they have to win all their games from hereon (against Sri Lanka, Pakistan and England), they will also have to hope that New Zealand and South Africa lose all their encounters from hereon. Or the other possibility, slimmer, will be to expect England to lose all their matches from hereon and drop in Net Run Rate below Windies. But a win each for New Zealand and South Africa, or a defeat to them, will end their campaign.

Brief Scores: Windies 150 in 43 overs (Kyshona Knight 41, Afy Fletcher 23; Leigh Kasperek 3-17, Lea Tahuhu 3-39) lost to New Zealand 151/2 in 18.2 overs (Rachel Priest 90, Suzie Bates 40*; Stafanie Taylor 1-27) by eight wickets.
