Melancholy Madness at the Wankhede

It was the perfect set-up for an IPL opener. Possibly the most popular franchise in the history of the league was making a return to the fold against the defending champions, Mumbai Indians. The Wankhede may be the Mumbai Indians' home ground, but the return of the ex-Indian captain to his usual yellow attire and, and his heroics in blue on that night eight seven years ago, had the Wankhede enchanted in the prelude to the opening encounter. The Indians were put in to bat by the Super Kings as the Indian rookies, Kishan, Krunal, and Suryakumar carried them to a defendable 165. The hosts had the Super Kings on the guillotine, at 84 for 6, and CSK were down and out, having lost their key batsmen to the chicanery of young Mayank Markande, not to mention the injury to Kedar Jadhav. The climax was yet to unfold, though. Jasprit Bumrah, one of the world's premier death bowlers, was carted for 20 in the penultimate over by Dwayne Bravo, leaving the visitors with 7 to win off the final over. It was the fallen warrior, Kedar Jadhav, who returned with a bad hamstring to scoop Mustafizur for a six and a four to pull off a heist that declared the 2018 IPL open.

The 2018 Chepauk roller coaster

Off-field issues limited the number of home games for the Chennai Super Kings to just one, but the city couldn't have picked a better game to host. Despite conceding at a run-rate of almost 9, the hosts kept pegging away at the KKR batting order, dismissing half their side at the 10-over mark (albeir, for 89 runs). It was then, that the Andre Russell show started. The Jamaican monster brought down the roof, and at times, cleared it, plundering 11 sixes in a manic 36-ball 88. The Chennai crowd was silenced as the Knight Riders cruised to 202/6 in their 20 overs. The chase, however, was something of a fairy tale. Rayudu and Watson started off in flamboyant fashion, cruising to 75 within the powerplay, losing Watson off the penultimate ball. Rayudu perished soon after, followed by Raina. It was then, that Sam Billings, the eventual Man of the Match, launched a stunning assault on the KKR bowlers, ravaging through them with a 23-ball 56, before Ravindra Jadeja finished things off with a towering six over cow corner to send the Chennai crowd into a supersonic frenzy.

A low-scoring Hyderabad humdinger

After a gut-wrenching loss in the tournament opener, the Mumbai Indians were asked to bat on a slow Hyderabad wicket by the host skipper. Rohit Sharma's team crawled to 147/8 after 20 overs, strangled by the wily Rashid, Shakib, and the slower-ball-bowling quicks who repeatedly foxed the flamboyant Mumbai batsmen on an uncharacteristically slow track - the first of many con-jobs they would produce over the course of the tournament. Nevertheless, the match was far from over, especially with the host of cutter specalists in the Mumbai side (Mustafizur and Bumrah) and of course, their newest spin-bowling star Mayank Markande. Despite the flying start, courtesy Saha and Dhawan, SRH succumbed to a dramatic collapse effected by Markande, only for Yusuf Pathan and Hooda to play uncharacteristically to nurdle their way towards the target. And then there was collapse 2.0 for the hosts, as they lost four wickets for two runs, leaving their number 11, Billy Stanlake, one run to get off the last ball. The southpaw's swing towards the midwicket boundary sent the local crowd into night-long celebrations, as the Sunrisers, aided by a pragmatic Deepak Hooda, just about managed to close out a chase that should have been a cakewalk.

The Royals find an unlikely hero

On flat deck at the Sawai Man Singh stadium in Jaipur, the Mumbai Indians opted to bat, and were got off to a fantastic start, courtesy some local talent - Suryakumar Yadav, with a 47-ball 72 and Ishan Kishan with a 42-ball 58. With the start that they got, the Mumbai Indians' middle order imploded, as Jofra Archer ripped the heart out of the Mumbai batting. After scoring just 33 off the last 28 balls, the Mumbai Indians ended up with a par total of 167/7 - a defendable score given their star-studded bowling line-up. Despite the platform set by Ben Stokes (40 off 27) and Samson (52 off 39), the Mumbai Indians dried up the runs in the middle-overs and eked out a few wickets too, as the equation came down to 43 to win off 18 with four wickets in hand. It was then, that Krishnappa Gowtham launched a jaw dropping assault on Mustafizur and Bumrah, two of the best death bowlers in the business, and cracked a six off Hardik Pandya to finish at 33 off 11, sealing a breathtaking chase with two balls to spare.

Kings XI survive Iyer onslaught

The Feroz Shah Kotla has been notorious for rebelling against the batsman's cause in the advent of the T20 format. After being asked to bat by the host franchise, the Kings XI Punjab struggled to score runs on a two-paced Kotla track and crawled to a seemingly below-par total of 143, with notable contributions from Karun Nair and David Miller, but failed to capitalize against the miserly Liam Plunkett and Trent Boult. Prithvi Shaw started off the chase in blazing fashion, clubbing a 10-ball 22 before falling prey to Ankit Rajpoot. This opened the floodgates on the hosts, as they collapsed around a sturdy Shreyas Iyer to 76 for 5. Rahul Tewatia then joined Iyer at the crease to stitch together a 47-run partnership, to get the hosts closer to the total, but with 21 needed off 13, Tewatia and Plunkett were dismissed in the space of 3 deliveries. A fantastic penultimate over by Sran left Mujeeb 17 to defend off the final over. A six and a four later, Shreyas Iyer was left with 5 to win it for his side and a boundary to tie, with some panic setting into the Punjab camp as well, but Iyer skied the final ball to Aaron Finch and fell just short of pulling off a single-handed triumph for the Daredevils, as the night ended in heartbreak for the host franchise.

MS Dhoni delivers a classic

It was a day when all loyalties were forgotten. When your top-three consists of QdK, AB de Villiers, and Virat Kohli, anything below a total of 200 is a bit of a disappointment. On this day, two of the three, delivered, as AB and QdK raced to fifties at break-neck pace, aided by a Mandeep cameo at the death to end up with 205/8 after 20 overs on the flattest of Bangalore tracks. CSK lost wickets at regular intervals right from the outset, losing four of their top-five for 74 in 9 overs and falling behind on the required rate as well, with Ambati Rayudu holding fort at one end. And then, the colossal figure of MS Dhoni walked in, having narrowly missed out on pulling off a miracle heist against KXIP just over a week ago. Rayudu and Dhoni put on 101 runs in the next 53 balls, but the gigantic target still left 30 to win off the last two overs after Rayudu's dismissal. After feeding off the inexperienced Siraj in the penultimate over, Dhoni and Bravo took the game into the final over, to be bowled by Corey Anderson, with 16 to win. Bravo, with a blend of class and luck, clubbed 11 off the first 3, handing over the strike to Dhoni, who carted the winning blow over cow corner to send even Bangalore crowd into delirium.

The Delhi batting redemption

After being asked to bat by the Kolkata Knight Riders in their homeground, the Delhi Daredevils local talent came to the fore, as Prithvi Shaw set the platform with a 44-ball 62 for Shreyas Iyer to lay into the Knight Riders, clubbing an unprecedented 10 sixes in an unbeaten 40-ball 93, as the Daredevils coasted past the 200-run mark, ending up at 219/4. The Kolkata franchise buckled under the pressure of the total, with the only notable contributions coming from Sunil Narine (26 off 9) and Andre Russell (44 off 30), falling short by a vast margin of 55 runs as Avesh Khan, Boult, Maxwell, and Mishra shared the spoils. It was a match that wasn't particularly close, but marked the coming of age of Shreyas Iyer and instilled confidence in an otherwise deflated Delhi batting, which would go on to turn out other stellar performances during the course of the tournament, even against the best bowling line-up of the tournament - the Sunrisers.

Much-maligned bowlers steer RCB home

In an encounter that ebbed and flowed throughout the course of play, the much maligned death bowling of the Royal Challengers finally held their own to script a remarkable 14-run win over the Mumbai Indians. Having been asked to bat first, the Bangalore-based franchise had a great start, only to slip away towards the latter half of the innings, falling from 121 for 2 to 143 for 7. Hardik Pandya was the main architect of their demise, taking 3 for 28. When it looked like the hosts would wound up with a pretty modest score on the board, Colin de Grandhomme stepped in, blasting a 10-ball 23 and ensuring that the momentum stayed with the hosts as they reached 167 for 7. In an inspired burst of pace bowling, Umesh Yadav and Tim Southee ripped through the Mumbai Indians' top-order, reducing them to 21 for 3. Hardik Pandya kept things afloat for the visitors, but with the required rate mounting, there was little he could do, despite making a fighting 42-ball 50. Eventually, the Mumbai based outfit were restricted to 153 for 7, losing by 14 runs

Daredevils hold nerve in rain-affected high-scoring finish

In a rain affected game, the Daredevils held on to their nerves to clinch a memorable 4-run victory over the Rajasthan Royals, one of the few moments of joy in what was a dismal season. The match was initially reduced to 18-overs a side after rain delayed the start of play. As if to make up for the lost time, the hosts started in a whirlwind fashion, with Prithvi Shaw and Shreyas Iyer adding 73 runs from just 40 balls for the second wicket. With the stage set, Rishabh Pant blazed his way to a 29-ball 69 as the hosts finished with 196 for 6 after 17.1 overs, when the innings was curtailed after yet another rain delay. The Royals were set a steep target of 151 from 12 overs when play resume after the second rain delay. While not many would have given them a chance, Jos Buttler and D'Arcy Short had other ideas - smashing 82 runs for the first wicket from 40 balls. Despite losing regular wickets, the visitors kept themselves in the hunt, needing 15 runs from the last over. Trent Boult held his nerve, conceding only 10 runs, to help Delhi eke home by 4 runs.

KKR plunder record score; flatten Kings XI Punjab

In a high-scoring encounter in Indore, both teams combined to pulverise each other's bowling line-up, as a massive 459 runs were scored between the Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab. Asked to bat first, the Knight Riders made the Kings regret their decision, piling on 245 for 6 from their 20 overs, the highest score for the 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League. Sunil Narine set the base with a 36-ball 75 and Dinesh Karthik capitalised on the blazing start to make a 23-ball 50. With useful contributions from the rest of the batting line-up, it was a score that would demoralise any batting batting line-up, but not this Kings XI outfit. In superb form right throughout the tournament, KL Rahul continued his blitzkrieg, blasting a 29-ball 66 to keep his team in with a sliver of hope. But it was too good to be true, once the elegant right-hander was dismissed, there was no way back for his team. Eventually, they settled at 214 for 8, falling short by 35 runs.

Mumbai win despite Rahul's heroics

In a cliffhanger, Kieron Pollard's 23-ball 50 topped KL Rahul's valiant 60-ball 94 as Mumbai Indians edged Kings XI Punjab by a small 3-run margin. Having come to bat with his team on the ropes at 71 for 4, Pollard took the bowling to the cleaners, despite Andrew Tye's 4 for 16, as he raced to a 22-ball 50 - playing a huge part in Mumbai's revival - as he stole 66 runs between over number 12 to 15. Eventually, the hosts finished their innings at 186 for 8. It was going to be a tough chase, but with KL Rahul in sublime form, the visitors knew they had a chance. He stitched 111 runs for the second wicket with Aaron Finch to off-set the early loss of Chris Gayle. with 42 needed from 24 balls and with 9 wickets in hand, it was advantage Punjab, but they hadn't counted on Jasprit Bumrah. In a burst of 3 for 10 from 2 overs, Bumrah put the match beyond Rahul's and Punjab's reach - consigning the Ashwin-led franchise to exit.

Superman AB keeps Challengers alive

In a high quality game that had plenty of runs and some exhilarating catches, the Royal Challengers kept their qualification hopes alive with a 14-run win over the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Asked to bat first, the Royals Challengers rode on the brilliance of AB de Villiers (39-ball 69) and Moeen Ali (34-ball 65) as they plundered 218 for 6 from their 20 overs. Basil Thampi, the lanky Kerala fast bowler, had a night to forget, finishing with 0 for 70, the most expensive bowling figures in the history of the tournament. The innings also included two high-quality catches, one by Shikhar Dhawan and the other by Rashid Khan - the latter could have been the catch of the tournament. If Rashid's effort wasn't the catch of the tournament, it was because of superman AB de Villiers - whose flying one-handed effort at the boundary ropes to dismiss Alex Hales was described as 'absolute magic' by Cricbuzz. Kane Williamson and Manish Pandey kept the visitors in the hunt with a 67-ball 135 runs stand for the third wicket, but the dismissal of the Sunrisers' captain stopped any chance of his team pulling off a heist.

Du Plessis steals Sunrisers' thunder

In a match that was lost at several stages, Chennai Super Kings rode on a fine effort from Faf du Plessis to reach the final of the 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League. First, they allowed the Sunrisers to escape from 88 for 6 to a somewhat decent 139 for 7 from their 20 overs, with Carlos Brathwaite making a 29-ball 43. The final over of the innings cost the Super Kings 20 runs and the momentum seemed to gave decisively slipped away from their grasp. Things went from bad to worse for MS Dhoni's men as they slipped to 24 for 3, then to 62 for 6 and to 113 for 8, but with du Plessis around, they knew they weren't completely out of the picture. Shardul Thakur had endured a rough day with the ball (0 for 50 from 4 overs), but his 5-ball 15* was equally good to du Plessis' 42-ball 67 as the Super Kings edged home by 2 wickets, with 5 balls to spare.

Watson scripts magic as CSK complete fairy tale run

Chennai Super Kings, who had served a 2-year ban on charges of betting and spot-fixing, made a fitting comeback by clinching the prestigious title for the third time, after a Shane Watson-inspired hundred. Set a competitive target of 179, the MS Dhoni-led franchise made light of a slow start and the subsequent early dismissal of Faf du Plessis, to romp home by 8 wickets and with nine deliveries to spare, as they completed a fitting finale. At the end of the batting powerplay, Hyderabad had no inclination of the massacre to come, as the Super Kings reached 35 for 1 - with Watson batting on a run-a-ball 19. The seventh over, bowled by Siddarth Kaul, went for 16 runs and there was no stopping Watson from there on. Suresh Raina chipped in with 32 in a partnership worth 117 runs from 57 balls. The Australian all-rounder remained unbeaten on a 57-ball 117, his second hundred of the season and a team which was called as 'dad's army' at the beginning of the tournament had surprised one and all. Earlier, the Sunrisers had skipper, Kane Williamson and Yusuf Pathan, to thank as they posted a fighting score. The skipper overcame a sluggish start to make a fine 36-ball 47 and Pathan powered them to a flourish at the end, remaining unbeaten on a 25-ball 45. But on a Watson special night, these knocks didn't matter in the end.
