Stats: Highlights of Under 19 World Cup

History was made at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui as India lifted their fourth Under 19 World title defeating Australia by eight wickets in the summit clash. India were the overwhelming favourites in the tournament and their victory margins in the tournament only testify the same. The Prithvi Shaw-led unit beat the eventual finalist Australia by 100 runs to kick off their campaign and then brushed aside both Zimbabwe and PNG by 10 wickets to finish as table toppers in the league phase. They then met Asian neighbours Bangladesh and Pakistan in the quarterfinal and semifinal, winning by 131 and 203 runs respectively. And finally, in the title clash, they defeated the three-time champions Australia by eight wickets to be crowned champions for a record fourth time.

India's U-19 titles

India were far ahead of the rest of the pack - both in batting and bowling charts - with them topping the batting average (44.53) as well as batting strike rate (84.61). The batting display was very strong, indicated by the fact that they lost the fewest wickets (28) despite playing the maximum possible six matches. On the other hand, they bowled out the opponents in each of the six matches they played, taking on an average about 39 overs each time. It was hardly a surprise that they dominated on all three bowling parameters - average (15.72), strike rate (25.7) and economy rate (3.66).

It was only the second instance of a team bowling out the opponents in each of the six matches of an U19 World Cup. India were the first side to do so when they bowled out their opponents in each of the six games in the 2006 edition in Sri Lanka while finishing runners-up to Pakistan. The difference of 28.81 in India's batting and bowling averages is the highest by any side that has lifted the trophy in any edition.

There were 25 individual hundreds scored in the entire tournament making it the most in an edition in the tournament's history. The previous most was 15 each in 2004 and 2012 tournaments. The top seven across the sides averaged 29.98 across 47 matches which is the most in any U19 World Cup, surpassing 26.18 in the 2014 edition in UAE. India's average of 44.53 with the bat is the third highest in the tournament's history after 46.07 by South Africa in 2000 and 45.15 by Australia in 2002.

On the other side of the spectrum, Kenya had the worst bowling average for a side in an U19 World Cup - 63.58 - and it gives them a difference between batting and bowling average of -47.13, which is again the worst for a side in any edition of the tournament's history. The two highest individual scores in Youth ODIs were both made against Kenya in this edition - 191 by Sri Lanka's Hasitha Boyaagoda and 180 by New Zealand's Jakob Bhula.

All of India's top three - Prithvi Shaw, Manjot Kalra and Shubman Gill - scored in excess of 250 runs which meant the lower middle-order were never under pressure. All three of them averaged above 65 and had a strike rate above 85 underlining their domination. On the bowling front, the pace trio of Kamalesh Nagarkoti, Shivam Mavi and Ishan Porel took 24 wickets between them. The triumvirate of left-arm spinners Anukul Roy, Shiva Singh and Abhishek Sharma choked the oppositions in the middle overs and finished the tournament taking 27 scalps at 14.92 with a wicket every 24.9 balls combined with an economy of 3.58 - all three best among spinners for any side in the tournament.

144.50 The average opening partnership per dismissal for India in the tournament with the stands reading 180, 67*, 155*, 16, 89 and 71. Skipper Shaw and Kalra opened the innings on five occasions while Gill and Harvik Desai put together 155* against Zimbabwe.

3 Bowlers taking 14 wickets each (the most) in the tournament - India'a Anukul Roy, Afghanistan's Qais Ahmad and Canada's Faisal Jamkhandi. This is the first time in 12 U19 World Cups that a bowler failed to pick at least 15 wickets in an edition.

8/35 by Australia's latest leg spin sensation Lloyd Pope in the quarterfinal against England in Queenstown is the best figures by any bowler in the tournament's history. He rewrote the record set by fellow team mate Jason Ralston four days ago against PNG when he took 7 for 15 in Lincoln. The previous best figures was by Sri Lanka's Jeevan Mendis who took 7 for 19 against Zimbabwe in Christchurch in 2002.

4 Fifty-plus scores in successive innings by India's Gill - the second player to hit four consecutive fifties in the tournament after Bangladesh's Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the 2016 edition in Bangladesh. Gill's run of four fifty-plus scores was preceded by two more in England last year taking his tally to six which is the most in the history of Youth ODIs. His scores this tournament read 63, 90*, 86, 102* and 31.

286.95 Strike rate for Afghanistan's Azmatullah Omarzai in his knock of 23-ball 66 in the quarterfinal against New Zealand in Christchurch. It is the second highest in terms of strike rate in a 50-plus score in the tournament history after Rishabh Pant's 24-ball 78 (SR 325.00) against Nepal in the previous edition in Bangladesh.

436 for 4by New Zealand against Kenya in Christchurch is the second highest team total in the history of Youth ODIs after Australia's 480 for 6 against Kenya in Dunedin in the 2002 edition of the tournament. Sri Lanka made 419 against them in Lincoln thereby making three of the four highest totals in the format against Kenyans

311 Winning margins for Australia against PNG and Sri Lanka against Kenya - the second biggest in terms of runs in the history of U19 World Cups. The only higher margin of win for a team batting first came in the 2002 edition when Australia beat Kenya by 430 runs in Dunedin in 2002.
