Edwards, Abbott help New South Wales bag One-Day Cup title

Sean Abbott, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon bagged nine scalps between them to power New South Wales to a crushing 102-run triumph in the final of Marsh One-Day Cup against the defending champions Western Australia in Sydney. Jack Edwards also played a vital role in NSW's victory, with a 122-ball 108 and was adjudged player of the final. Incidentally, NSW had ended up sixth and last in the 2019-20 One-Day Cup season.

WA, who were set a target of 252, paid the price for losing their first three wickets inside 15 overs, with the duo of Abbott and Starc running through the heart of the top order. Lower down the order, Josh Ingils (29) and Cameron Green (36) helped the side make a partial recovery, but couldn't convert their starts into big scores. Green in particular tried to hold the innings together before he was run out in the 39th over. Starc provided the finishing touches by castling the last man, Lance Morris, for no score. For New South Wales, Abbott was the best bowler on show finishing with four wickets for the cost of just 23 runs.

However, it wasn't all smooth sailing for NSW. Just like WA, NSW too were three down by the end of the 15th over. The pair of Daniel Hughes and Edwards then resurrected the innings with an alliance of 118 for the fourth wicket. Eventually, after accumulating a patient 102-ball 58, Hughes was stumped in the 38th over.

Edwards, though, continued to collect crucial runs and added a stand of 45 with Olivier Davies. The 20-year-old was dismissed only in the final over of the innings. Jason Behrendroff, who bagged a three-for in his previous outing against Tasmania, returned impressive figures of 3 for 46 while Mitchell Marsh chipped in with a couple of scalps.

Brief scores: New South Wales 251/8 in 50 overs (Jack Edwards 108; Jason Behrendorff 3-46) beat Western Australia 149 in 40.3 overs (Cameron Green 36; Sean Abbott 4-23) by 102 runs.
