When the bowlers do well, it helps the team's confidence - Mahedi

Bangladesh all-rounder Mahedy Hasan said on Wednesday that they are eyeing to make history in the ongoing three-match T20I series against New Zealand after earning their maiden win in the shortest format against Kiwis at their own backyard.

Bangladesh claimed a historic five-wicket win over New Zealand on Wednesday as they reached 137-5 in 18.4 overs after restricting the opponent to 136 on the back of a collective bowling effort.

Four days after claiming a maiden away one-day international win over the Black Caps in Napier, the tourists managed to win their first Twenty20 victory on New Zealand soil following nine successive defeats.

Bangladesh are slated to play their next two games in Mount Maunganui, a venue where they earned their first Test win over New Zealand at their own backyard in 2022.

"We are ahead in the series and we have good memories of Mount Maunganui. We won a Test match there and we will be having a good chance in the T20s," Mahedy, who picked the man of the match award following his all-round performance told reporters after the game in Napier.

"When you win, the confidence is good both as a player and as a team and now we are going to another venue to win and for that, we need to adapt to the conditions as soon as possible," he said.

"Pacers are doing well and everyone's performance is important behind a win, it's not on the back of one or two cricketers' performance. Both the spinners and the pacers did well so we could restrict them to a small total and could manage to win the game," he said.

"When the bowlers do well, it helps the team as it grows confidence. In the last game, the bowling unit bowled very well and bowlers know that in this condition, they have to come up with smart bowling and all of whom bowled did well for us," he said.

Mahedy added that Liton Das guided him in the middle with the bat that helped them stitch an unbeaten 40-run stand and helped his team clinch the historic win.

"As Liton was batting for long time, he had a good understanding regarding the wicket and we needed a small partnership to win the game. We had a partnership but we lost two to three wickets in quick span of time at that point. Liton told me to be positive and play my natural game and we will see what can be done in the last two overs," he said.

"Chasing the runs quickly was possible in this kind of a wicket, and more so the runs they scored could be chased quickly, but the momentum can change quickly as we were in front initially while they turned the table in the middle overs and we came back good at the end. The momentum will change in the course of a game and that is natural," he added.
