Morgan impressed with Root's hunger and determination

After a thrilling Test series and a close-fought ODI series, the New Zealand tour of England ended with the one-off T20I that the hosts clinched with relative ease imposing a convincing 56-run victory over the Black Caps. England, who opted to bat first, posted an intimidating 191/7 on the board. With the wicket being good, it was expected that New Zealand would make a game out of it but the home team bowlers regrouped to deliver an inspired performance and bowled out the visitors for 135 in the 17th over.

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum praised the home side and acknowledged that it has been a wonderful series for the tourists. He gave credit to Kane Williamson for his impressive fightback and also spoke highly of Eoin Morgan's captaincy.

"Some of our batting was pretty amateurish. Credit to England that they got hold of us and played well throughout. I thought it was a par score as it was a very good surface. I wasn't unhappy at halftime. We got off to a reasonable start as well, but couldn't carry on. Williamson did well to keep us in the game longer. He's one of those guy who keeps doing his job. It is great to see him do what he has been doing for the past 18 months."

"Disappointed with the ODI series and obviously to lose here, but it has been a good series. We have learned some good lessons and we will keep developing. They played better than us. Morgan has led his side well, he also likes to play with the same style."

Speaking about England's new-found attacking approach, he said, "England in the next 2 years will be a very exciting team if they keep going like this."

"It has been a long, long season for us. I am very pleased with the way our season has gone. We have achieved so much that we never did," he added.

England skipper Eoin Morgan was ecstatic with the turnaround his side has shown after the dismal showing in the World Cup four months ago. He was generous in his praise for Joe Root and expressed happiness over England's victorious campaign.

"It was very special. Coming out and playing in the same fashion like the ODIs, was very pleasing. Root's hunger and determination to keep playing the way he does shows the mood in the dressing room. We were so off the mark in the World Cup. Coming back here, we knew we had a lot of work to do. It has been a quick turnaround. We continued to churn out runs with the bat. We will keep working on the skills as we go on. We will definitely learn more if we keep winning."

The average age of the group is 24-25. As a captain, I am very excited about this very side. Root and Buttler have led by example and hopefully, they can continue like that. We won the ODI series, we won this T20I, it gives us a lot of confidence going forwards. We know that sometimes it might not come off, but mostly it will."

He also talked about how New Zealand inspired them to play their best and conceded that now they are eagerly looking forward to the upcoming Ashes series.

"A lot of credit to New Zealand, we have been chasing them in white ball cricket and we have tried to emulate them, it has been good so far. Everyone in the changing room realises that what we have achieved is a start and there is a long way to go forward. I certainly feel that everyone has a lot more to give. I think it's going to be very exciting with the Ashes coming up."

Joe Root, who hammered a 46-ball 68, was adjudged as the Man of the Match for his splendid performance. The youngster, who had had a terrific tour, expressed confidence regarding the current England side.

"I feel pretty good at the crease at the moment. Fingers crossed that it will continue during the summer. I told that if we took wickets, it will be hard for them to chase it down and the bowlers did that. It's a long way away from us. We can enjoy what we have achieved as a side, but we need to keep moving forward. We need to keep working harder as well. Everyone's going to play with freedom this summer."

He also admitted that he can't wait for the Ashes to begin and warned the England players that they now need to be more consistent with their approach.

"Hopefully, it can continue with the Australians. We will look to do this on a more consistent basis now. Our next opponents are Australia and it will good if we get to see the back of Smith and a few others early."
