Stats: Priyank Panchal's season of reckoning

Gujarat won their maiden Ranji Trophy title defeating the defending champions Mumbai by five wickets in a closely contested final in Indore. It was Gujarat's only second appearance in a final in the tournament with the last one coming way back in 1950-51 when they lost to Holkar by 189 runs. It was only the fifth time Mumbai lost a final and first since 1990-91 and in between they added ten more titles.

The target of 312 was the highest ever fourth innings chase in the finals of tournament history surpassing 310 by Hyderabad against Nawanagar in 1937-38. Parthiv Patel lead from the front scoring 90 and 143, the latter being the fourth highest in the fourth innings of a Ranji Trophy final. This is Gujarat's third successive domestic title in last three years, having won Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2014-15 and Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2015-16.

A look into some key numbers from the 83rd edition of Ranji Trophy:

1310 runs scored by Priyank Panchal is the third highest aggregate in a season in Ranji Trophy after VVS Laxman (1415 in 1990-00) and Shreyas Iyer (1321 in 2015-16). He also became the first player to score over 1000 runs in a season for Gujarat.

594 The unbeaten stand of 594 between Maharashtra's Swapnil Gugale and Ankit Bawne against Delhi at the Wankhede is the highest ever in the history of Ranji Trophy. They went past 577 by Vijay Hazare and Gul Mohammad for Baroda against Holkar in the 1946-47 season. There is just one higher stand in all first-class cricket - 624 by Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara against South Africa in Colombo (SSC) in 2006.

24 double hundreds scored this season is the most ever in a season in Ranji Trophy history. The next best is 20 in the 1991-92 season. Five triple centuries this season is also the joint most for a season alongside the 2012-13 season.

945 runs by Gahlaut Rahul Singh of Services is the second most by a player in his debut season in Ranji Trophy after 995 by Jiwanjot Singh in the 2012-13 season for Punjab. It is also the most by a Services player in a season in Ranji Trophy eclipsing 790 by Yashpal Singh in 2012-13.

359* by Samit Gohel is the highest individual score in a team's second innings in Ranji Trophy history and second highest in all first-class cricket after Don Bradman's 452 against Queensland in 1929-30. It is also the highest by a batsman carrying the bat in first-class games surpassing 357* by Bobby Abel for Surrey against Somerset at the Oval in 1899.

2 Instances of three double hundreds scored in the same match this season - Maharashtra against Delhi and Punjab against Baroda. There are just six previous such instances and never more than one such instance happened in the same season. The match between Maharashtra and Delhi saw two triple hundreds being scored, just the second such instance in all first-class cricket after Tamil Nadu vs Goa in 1988-89 edition of Ranji Trophy.

102 Double hundreds scored by captains in Ranji Trophy history. Yuvraj Singh's 260 against Baroda was the 100th while that match also witnessed the first instance of opposite captains scoring double hundreds in the same Ranji Trophy match with Deepak Hooda scoring an unbeaten 293 for Baroda.

21 sixes hit by Rishabh Pant against Jharkhand in Trivandrum is the most ever in a Ranji Trophy match and second most in any first-class game. Ishan Kishan's 14 sixes for Delhi in the same match is the joint most in an innings in Ranji Trophy alongside 14 by Shakti Singh for Himachal Pradesh against Haryana in 1990-91.

48 Balls taken to reach hundred by Rishabh Pant for Delhi against Jharkhand in Trivandrum. It is the known fastest in terms of balls faced in Ranji Trophy, eclipsing 56 ball effort of Rajesh Bohra for Assam against Tripura in Guwahati in 1987-88.

56 Wickets taken by Shahbaz Nadeem this season to go along with 51 in the last season. He became only the second bowler after Kanwaljit Singh to grab more than 50 wickets in a season on two instances. Kanwaljit took 51 in 1998-99 and 62 the following season for Hyderabad.

356 Wickets taken by R Vinay Kumar of Karnataka in Ranji Trophy at the end of the 2016-17 season. He usurped Madan Lal (351 wickets) from the top of leading wicket takers among pace bowlers in the tournament history. Pankaj Singh of Rajasthan equaled with Madan Lal at 351 wickets.

53 dismissals for Aditya Tare behind the wickets - 49 catches and four stumpings. He became the first wicketkeeper to effect 50 dismissals in a season in Ranji Trophy and went past his own record of 48 dismissals last year.

138 In the Group A match against Baroda, Madhya Pradesh's Devendra Bundela became the most capped player in Ranji Trophy history. He went past the record of Amol Muzumdar who appeared in 136 matches across a span of 21 seasons for Mumbai, Assam and Andhra. Among the current players, Mithun Manhas is next with 135 caps.

1 Saurashtra's Jaydev Shah became the first player to captain in 100 Ranji Trophy games in their league game against Vidarbha. He has captained Saurashtra in 102 out of the 112 matches he played for them in Ranji Trophy.

64 Outright results in this season from 124 matches, the one more than last year from 116 matches. While nine matches ended inside two days and 20 inside three in 2015-16, the numbers came down to three and 13 respectively this season. 19 matches were won by an innings margin last year in comparison to 11 this year.
