A little after 6.10pm, Washinton Sundar was handed his Twenty20 International cap. He became the 72nd player to play the shortest format for India. Of course, he would have been told that he'll make his debut but it was all set to become a reality. Washington's exploits with the new ball prompted Rohit Sharma to ask the offspinner to open the bowling. He became the sixth Indian debutant to either bowl the first ball of the match or start the second innings. If there were nerves, they weren't helped by the Hardik Pandya misfield at long-on in the third over. However, Kusal Perera lobbed the next ball back to him giving him his first T20I wicket. Not a bad start in what is expected to be a long career.

Niroshan Dickwella is a very confident cricketer but his failures in the limited-overs series in India also hurt Sri Lanka's chances significantly. Trying to get quick runs in the T20I series, he has perished to Jaydev Unadkat in all three matches. This was only the eighth instance of a batsman getting dismissed by the same bowler in three-plus successive innings in T20Is.

When the MCA official refused to move

One thing modern day batsmen absolutely hate is people moving in front of the sightscreen. In India, especially elaborate measures are taken to ensure play isn't interrupted because of movement in front of sightscreen. In the first over of the match, play was halted with Upul Tharanga not happy with several people in front of him. One of the MCA officials made sure the security persons moved away, ensured the cameraman moved a touch and still stood his ground. Only to realise it was him the umpire was pointing at to move away from all the action.

Sri Lanka's newfound support

When things are not going your way, it can get even worse when the crowd starts going against you as well. Sri Lanka, though, found quite a few supporters at the Wankhede. Fearing another one-sided contest, the crowd started asking for, and cheering, all the boundaries hit by the visitors. Make no mistake, the wickets got the loudest cheer but the crowd did their best to prop up Sri Lanka.

The Indian fans were desperate to see MS Dhoni bat. Every single run was cheered as if it's taking India to a World Cup. Dhoni's second ball was an outside edge for a boundary. The noise for that was deafening. He then went on to survive a LBW review. There were cheer, the 'ooos' and the 'aahhs' before their dearest took the team over the line, with Dinesh Karthik's help of course.

It had to come to an end at some point. The venue in Mumbai hasn't been a happy hunting ground for the hosts when it comes to limited-overs cricket. There have been several harsh defeats including the one in the semifinal of the ICC World Twenty20 against Windies last year.

During the chase, Sri Lanka revived hopes of a win. However, India managed to break free and register a win - their first at the venue in limited-overs cricket since November 2012.
