But then it's been one of those pleasantly surprising tours - one you expect to get bored with, only for the contest to be so damn equal. Shane Dowrich | MoS: Good performances right through the series, but it would have been good to sign off with a win. Credit to the Sri Lankans, they bowled really well to pull it back. This gives me a lot of confidence going forward and I'll look to take that into the next series which is starting shortly. As I said, their bowlers really took it away from us in the second innings. I have been struggling with an injury to my back, but I have a week for rehabilitation.

Suranga Lakmal | Winning skipper: I am very happy, my first Test match as a captain and it is a good opportunity to lead. Three fast bowlers and a spinner did well and the entire team worked very hard right through the series.

Jason Holder | Losing skipper | MoM: Obviously not the ending we were looking for. Credit to Sri Lanka, they played an outstanding game last night. Their opening bowlers Lakmal and Kumara pushed us back but we just did not have enough runs in the second innings. It put our bowlers too under pressure to come back. But still we should be proud of the way we fought. I think we lost in the second innings with our batting performance, we just didn't put enough runs on the board. Even when we gave them 140-odd we thought we were in the game and our new ball bowlers too picked up early wickets. We missed a few chances in the field, and no-balls are an area we need to improve on. But again, the second innings batting performance let us down. It has been a tough Test match and a tough Test series for me personally, but we have to turn it around quickly between this series and the one against Bangladesh coming up next week. Lots of positives - Shannon Gabriel bowled brilliantly, Shane Dowrich too. Roach needs to be mentioned too. But we needed more people to stand up. A few good top-order partnerships too should put us in good stead.

The first two days were more like cricket in the rain breaks. And that cricket too meant mostly wickets. But the Windies turned it around snatching a huge 50-run lead in the context. But the Lankans made the twist hairpin bend like with the new ball under lights to skittle the batsmen out for 93. And then this partnership, killing any suspense there could be .. umm, we've had enough. Stick around for the 'official' presentations.

Chandika Hathurusingha, Sri Lankan coach: Really great feeling for the boys. Lot of ups and downs in the series, so to come back and level the series is a great feeling. We were under pressure from the start, I felt Jason led them really well and we responded really well. We won the match in the second innings when we took their 7 wickets for just 50 odd runs. Suranga had a talk with the boys before the start of the innings, and that worked. He led from the front, that spell in the second innings proved to be decisive. This is a young team without our senior players. This will give young players a lot of confidence. We will feel really confident after this victory. Kusal Mendis is an outstanding player. We made him bat at three different positions and he responded really well. He is a great player, one for the future.

Dilruwan Perera: Really happy to finish the game like this. We thought if we could bat longer, we could achieve the target. We knew the wicket was a little uneven so it would be hard, and if we could bat positively, we could get the runs. We (Kusal and I) both play for the same club and we know each other. We managed to pile up the runs slowly. And this is the first time I've batted this way, so it was pretty hard for us, and I'm happy we managed to achieve it. I expected the seamers to do the job but when I am given the ball, I look to take wickets. He (Lakmal) has good experience of leadership and has won a domestic event as captain, so congratulations to him.

15:53 local: Injuries, bans, more injuries - Mathews, Gamage, Herath, Chandimal - but Sri Lanka have unleashed that defiant character of theirs. They needed to win to draw the spoils, and the two Pereras did it in style. Kusal, after almost ruling himself out with his suicidal dive into the ad hoardings at the boundary, returned with a counter-attacking blitz. And Dilruwan hung around, played many, missed many more, but hung around. When Mendis fell in the first over, it required the West Indians only one more wicket to get into the tail. Not to be.
