Ireland took England to the brink, but they couldn't nail the final coffin. But they have plenty of cricket coming up ahead and this loss could only spur them on. On the other hand, England's defence of their number one ODI ranking has started shakily, but they will only learn from this experience. Eoin Morgan - At certain stages, we knew it would be challenging. The bowlers did a great job, 3 or 4 of us batted very poorly. Foakes and Curran put a great partership, his keeping was great as well. Jofra started well, it's difficult to start off on your debut, but it was a good day out, got some overs behind them. Cardiff is a great place to play cricket, we are looking forward to play against the number one ranked T20I team on Sunday.

William Porterfield - It was a tricky start, but we needed a partnership. Showed plenty of fight, especially the three debutants. The lads have a great future, just need to keep it on. Seven ODIs in the next 15-20 days, we need to keep going through with our work.

Ben Foakes - It was tricky conditions, but you'd expect those here. They were disciplined and it was a tough pitch, very slow indeed. We knew there was no run scoring pressure on us, started building a partnership and took the team through.

At 66 for 5, Ireland sensed an upset, at 101 for 6, they were well within reach. The pivotal moment came when England had reached 137, a big LBW shout was negated by umpire Dharmasena and the hosts decided against a review. Replays showed they erred big time and they were made to repent by Foakes and Curran. On debut, Foakes played very sensibly before opening up towards the end, Curran was the ideal partner and his 98-run stand took the match away from Ireland's grasp. Until this stand, Joshua Little had a debut to remember himself, grabbing four wickets in no time. Murtagh and Dockrell were disciplined, but the lack of wickets meant the batsmen were under no pressure to force the pace.
