While breaking a big losing streak was much-needed, what's more important for West Indies is that they've pocketed 10 precious Super League points. They ended the T20I series on a high and have begun the ODIs in similar fashion. The mood in the hosts' camp will definitely be buzzing right now. As for the Kiwis, well, it's one of those rare off-days that they've had and they wouldn't be too fussed by today's failure. Today's result sets up the series nicely. Nicholas Pooran | West Indies captain: We looked at the surface and it seemed dry. Against Australia last time, it played similar. We felt like three spinners would be a good idea. Was about taking a risk and it worked out for us. These guys taking their opportunities in their first game was really good to see. We've been looking for leg spinners and it was nice to see him (Cariah) do well. We knew it was going to be tricky for sure. Brooks batted well and we knew that we were only one partnership away. It gets better here at night once you get set. Glad that we could break the losing streak today and get some points.

Kane Williamson | New Zealand captain: I thought we couldn't get any rhythm to our batting, so credit to the West Indies bowlers. I thought they put on a complete performance. I thought at the halfway stage that it could have been competitive. West Indies batted well and we couldn't extract enough either. Guys were trying hard (with the ball) but it didn't quite go our way today. Was nice for the guys to get some overs in the belt. Hopefully we can execute better in the next game.

Shamarh Brooks | Player of the Match: Watching the Kiwis bat, I realised that it was very tough batting early on. Idea was to just get some partnerships and chase the total off. Wasn't an easy track to start on but the longer you spent out there, easier it got. It's a big thing (to beat NZ) and there has been a definite improvement in our performances. Just want our guys to grow from strength to strength. Just told him (Pooran) that we've never had a partnership together in this format.

22:00 Local Time, 02:00 GMT, 07:30 IST: It's not everyday that you get to see a largely clinical ODI performance from the West Indies but today was a perfect example of that. The target was always below-par, but on a spicy surface, New Zealand weren't out of it either. They also did strike twice in the first powerplay to cause some jitters but the hosts managed to weather the storm and played an aggressive brand of cricket throughout the run chase. They were also aided by some inconsistent bowling from the Kiwis, Ferguson in particular who struggled to find his radar. The bowling was good only in patches and with such a low score to defend, the Black Caps just couldn't create sustained pressure on their opponents. Brooks was the star in the batting with a proactive half-century that all but did the job for his side. New Zealand will rue their batting performance, because a score in the 240-250 range would have been a real handful on this deck.
