New Zealand got off to a quickfire start as skipper Brendon McCullum and his opening partner Martin Guptill made clear their intentions of ripping apart Australian bowlers on a small ground. The duo put on 84 runs in 9.3 overs, before McCullum holed out to John Hastings, who took a brilliant catch. The Seddon Park crowd rose to their feet to give a standing ovation to the captain and one of New Zealand's finest cricketers.
Martin Guptill and Kane Willamson had steadied the innings following the dismissal of Brendon McCullum. However, the in-form duo departed in quick succession. While Guptill fell to Adam Zampa after reaching his half-century, Williamson was cleaned up by Scott Boland.
Yet again, a partnership that looked good to go strong, broke just when it should have shifted a gear higher. Grant Elliot and Henry Nicholls were looking good in the middle, before Josh Hazlewood had the latter play a loose drive outside the off-stump and get an edge to Steve Smith at slips. Fourth wicket down for the hosts.
Corey Anderson, who was struggling in the middle and found it difficult to get the scoreboard moving at a good pace, is dismissed. New Zealand lose their fifth wicket.
New Zealand lost their last five wickets for only 23 runs, handing over the initiative to Australia. Josh Hazlewood, John Hastings and Scott Boland bagged three wickets each, while Adam Zampa snared one and Mitchell Marsh bagged three.
After proving another quick start, David Warner went on the back-foot and tried to punch the delivery over cover, but ended up giting an easy catch to Grant Elliot, who was stationed there. New Zealand get their first breakthrough.
Usman Khawaja, who has been in superb form, got off to yet another brisk start. The left-hander, who was set for yet another big knock lost his wicket against the run of play looking to play a lazy drive. He ended up getting an edge to the wicketkeeper.
Ish Sodhi strikes twice in one over to put New Zealand back in the game. Australia, who were cruising in the chase just a while back, have lost three wickets in quick succession. After Khawaja's dismissal, Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell fell to Sodhi. Four wickets down.
Everything seemed to be going fine when Mitchell Marsh hit the ball back to Matt Henry. However, on the first instance, it was only Matt Henry who made a half appeal. But it wasn't convincing enough. When the bowler was walking back to his run-up, the big screen suggested that the batsman hit the ball on his shoes and not on the ground, before it reached the bowler's hand. Brendon McCullum asked for a review and it went in the favour of the hosts.
New Zealand bowlers bowled brilliantly to bowl Australia out for 191 runs. New Zealand's fielding too was top-class to ensure that Australian batsmen don't get their runs easily. In the end, New Zealand won the match by 56 runs and retained the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy. A fitting farewell for Brendon McCullum, who did what he does best - entertained the crowd with his explosive batting and led the side with aggression and tact.
