South Africa win by 40 runs

A bit of an anti-climax at the end. Australia were in the chase for a good portion but Shaun Marsh's dismissal soon after the century hurt Australia real bad. Glenn Maxwell struggled for any kind of rhythm and could manage a rather scratchy 35 from 27. But it was almost over once Shaun was gone.

Massive effort from South Africa. They win their first ODI series in Australia since 2009. They had one bad game in Adelaide, when they should have ideally chased down 231. But today they put on a commanding middle-order batting display to close it out.

That 252-run stand between Du Plessis (125) and Miller (139) will be one for the ages, given that it came from a position of 55/3 in the 16th over. More work to be done for Australia. They've got to get their batting composition right. And on the evidence of today, have some work in the death bowling department as well.

Anyway, they have one T20I against this South African team and then India lurk around the corner! It's going to be fun following their progress as they build towards their World Cup defence next year.

That's it from us. Until next time, ciao!

Dropped chance doesn't cost much

Steyn gets Carey nicking, QdK accepts the offering. Lungi Ngidi follows up with a solid over as Pat Cummins keeps swinging and missing. South Africa definitely ahead now. 64 needed off 24. All to do for Maxwell!

Chance goes begging

Pretorius misjudges one at fine leg. Alex Carey top edges this pull off Ngidi. But he survives. He has to keep going here when Rabada and Steyn come along.

Glenn, the Big Show, Maxwell is in...

He gets a swivel pull away for four straight away. Pretorius finishes with figures of 2 for 61. Under the situation, it's a great effort from the designated fifth bowler. 87 off 48 needed now. Ngidi comes back.

Massive wicket - Centurion Marsh is gone

Another big wicket for Pretorius. Wowza and this is the centurion Shaun Marsh who has to depart. Pretorius takes pace off the ball and Marsh targets that mid-wicket boundary once again. Manages only a top-edge. Klaasen settles under the skier. What an innings though from Marsh. 106 off 102

Century - A classy innings from Shaun Marsh

Sixth ton in ODIs, third in 2018 for this elegant batsman. Has made sure there was no harakiri after those early wickets. When the opportunity presented itself, he's been unafraid to pepper the mid-wicket fence.

106 needed off 60! Who you got?

Wicket - Pretorius gets Stoinis 146/4

The 107-run stand is broken. This could be a massive moment in the game. A nothing ball after being hit for two sixes earlier in the over from Pretorius. Short and wide outside off, Stonis could have hit it anywhere. He finds Markram at point. Gone for 63 off 76.

Has the 5th bowler done his bit? Here's Alex Carey. This one's delicately poised now!

#AUSvSA now a nicely setup T20. Around 170 to get in 20 overs on a relatively small Bellrive Oval. Maxwell yet to come. Advantage SA but you never know. Will it be @Gmaxi_32 day ?

A DRS reprieve here as well

Talking of similarities with the similarities of this stand with Faf-Miller, Stoinis has just been reprieved by the DRS. He'd got some bat on an attempted sweep off Markram (yes, replacing Tahir). Dar didn't spot it and gave him out LBW straight away. His decision is rightly overturned.

Excellent rebuild operation

Are we in for a repeat of the first innings. A fourth innings stand to rival another? Because this one's progressing just like how the South Africa's did. Stoinis and Marsh have both got to their fifties. They've ransacked Imran Tahir, who has given away 48 from his 6. (Remember Stoinis himself had given away 53).

Slow start for Stoinis

He has 4 off 19 balls. Australia have 46 after 15 overs. But as Miller and Du Plessis showed earlier, you can always catchup with the scoring rate. There'a sarcastic applause going around the Bellerive Oval after a sequence of 12 balls without a run is broken.

It's time for spin with Imran Tahir. Keep an eye out on how South Africa play the fifth bowler - Dwaine Pretorius.

Here's a telling stat:

Wicket - Head's misery ends 39/3

Head looked so unsettled there. This wicket was coming. Pushes this Rabada delivery away from the body and Markram completes a sharp catch at backward point. 6 off 21 balls. A wicket now for Rabada. He has bowled two maidens in a row. Australia making it very difficult for themselves. They need a version of Faf-Miller themselves now.

Shaun Marsh looking fluid

Barring a couple of nervy inside edges, some of Shaun Marsh's cover driving has been straight out of the top draw. He looked a little ginger fielding in the boundary. Doesn't look uncomfortable with the bat here.

The same cannot be said of his partner, Head. He's been moved back to No.4 and that hasn't really contributed to a change in his batting rhythm.

Wicket - Finch chips to mid-on 18/2

Ngidi gets a wicket now. When Australia review their series, they'll find quite a pattern of batsmen getting caught at mid-on/mid-off. This is similar. The bat turns in his hand as he attempts to knock a length delivery down the ground. Rabada completes a simple catch. Trouble. Let me highlight that word just in case.

Wicket - Lynn experiment fails 1/1

Rejigging the top-order has done nothing for Australia. Promoted opener Chris Lynn is gone for a first-ball duck, nicking a short of length ball from Dale Steyn to Quinton de Kock while attempting to push it through covers off the back foot.

Ouch:

End of innings - South Africa get 320

Miller departs in the final over for 139 to a nice catch from Aaron Finch on the mid-wicket boundary rope. South Africa have a monster score. They've added 75 runs in the last 5 overs and a whopping 130 runs in the final 10. Australia have a mountain to climb if they're to overhaul this total on a surface that occasionally gets two-paced!

Wicket - Du Plessis falls for 125

End of an extraordinary 252-run stand. Du Plessis walks off to a standing ovation from this sparse Hobart crowd. Deserves it. He has holed out to the sweeper cover off a short off-cutter from Stoinis. Another six balls to go in the innings.

Miller gets there now

Off 95 balls. Sweet relief for him and for all the South African fans fretting about the middle-order. Always over promised and under delivered. This innings may have come at the right time for them. And what a situation from where to get it! Gold.

300 on the cards now!

Ton up for Du Plessis

No. 10 for the South Africa captain in ODIs. This has been a classic leader's innings! Miller is likely to follow suit very quickly. A massive score on cards for the visitors now.

200 up in the 41st over

South Africa have scored 50 off the last five (bet. 36-41) ! This Hazlewood over brought 14 of those. Du Plessis with a four over cover and then a pulled six. Kicking on big time. The partnership now reaches 150.

Opening up after the half-centuries

This spells danger for Australia. Both Faf and Miller have gone past 50 and are beginning to cut loose. Faf's brought out his ramp shot. Miller is crunching those drives and Stoinis continues to struggle. His 6 overs have gone for 53. We have 11 overs left from here. Cummins+Starc+Hazlewood have only 9 left between them.

What. A. Review!

Du Plessis, after two DRS mishaps in the last two games, saves his partner and potentially the match (we'll see about it). Miller seemed content on walking away after being struck in front off a Maxwell delivery. Du Plessis called for the review in the final available second. And lo! The ball's deemed to be going over. Not out. The partnership builds. It's 78 nowif you've not been keeping count.

Du Plessis and Miller rebuild for South Africa

Impressive partnership building here between this experienced pair of Du Plessis and David Miller. They've expertly targetted the fourth and fifth bowlers really well. Stoinis hasn't been allowed to settle into a spell forcing Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins to come back for shorter spells in an attempt to break this stand.

When they've come back, they've been cover-driven with some class!

Reprieve for Du Plessis

Carey drops the South African captain on 29.Maxwell should have had a wicket in his second over. But the feather has not been grabbed by the keeper. How much will this hurt the hosts?

Wicket - Another strangle, Markram gone 55/3

"Aiden Markram finds ways to get out," my colleague Bharath Ramraj exclaims. This is another of those old-fashioned strangle down the leg side. It may seem like an inspired bit of bowling change by Finch to get Starc back on after this pair went after Stoinis.

But the Aussie skipper will take this rub of the green. It's a nothing delivery down the legside and Markram can only get a tickle on his waft. Another catch for Carey!

Miller and Faf have it all to do now.

Wowza!

Markram's done this twice now. Stoinis going slightly short of a length, trying to bring the two-paced nature of the wicket into play, but Markram goes back quickly and mows it into the grass banks beyond the square leg boundary. He has three sixes now (first one off Hazlewood) and they'll definitely help with the run-rate.

Markram & Du Plessis looking to take the attack to Stoinis! 3 overs gone for 25 for him after that early wicket. Time for spin, then! Yep... Here's Zampa in the 15th over.

Here's a stat Faf wouldn't want to read waling in at this pressure situation

Wicket - Hendricks strangled down leg 26/2

He was put down by a diving Travis Head in the last over. He can't cash in on that reprieve. It's a pretty soft dismissal really as he moves across towards his off-stump and his glance goes only as far as the keeper. That golden arm of Marcus Stoinis!

Stoinis v Hendricks in this series: 7 balls, 2 dismissals, 0 runs scored

^^This naturally prompts some Warne vs Cullinan banter in the comm box.

Aha... Spicy!

South Africa get a mini move-on in the eighth over. It nearly begins with a run-out. Markram and Hendricks (them again). The former could have be a goner here after Hendricks sends him back. Cummins doesn't realise he has time to take aim and throw. He goes off-balance and misses the stumps. Keeper has no time to get to the wickets either. Chance goes begging.

This is followed by a pulled six by Markram off Hazlewood, which doesn't impress the big quick one bit. He makes his displeasure known with a smile and a few choicest words.

Restraint from Markram and Hendricks

Tight lines from Australia's new ball pair. No freebies on offer. There's movement off the seam. Markram and Hendricks are playing within themselves. Trying to get their eye in.

It's that kind of a game, Madhur! Quality bowling. Also, it's 13 runs. You may have missed the four off the last ball.

Wicket - De Kock nicks one 4/1

It was coming. De Kock was batting on a leg-stump guard and this one moves pitches on middle&off and moves away ever so slightly. QdK can't resist a poke and Carey collects the feather. Great start for Australia.

Good start with the ball

Bounce and carry on offer. Both Hazlewood and Starc are looking sprightly and up for a challenge. Should be a probing period this.

Australia XI: Aaron Finch (c), Travis Head, Shaun Marsh, Chris Lynn, Alex Carey (wk), Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoins, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.

South Africa XI: Quinton de Kock (wk), Aiden Markram, Reeza Hendricks, Faf du Plessis (c), Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Dwaine Pretorius, Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Imran Tahir.

TOSS - Australia opt to bowl. Both teams stick to the same line-ups that featured in the second ODI in Adelaide.

Decider - Prelude

Ting. Ting. Ting. We're up nice and early. Welcome to the ODI series decider between Australia & South Africa. Who would've thought we'd get here when the Aussies were bowled out for 231 in Adelaide!

Yet here we are, facing the very real possibility of seeing Australia win a series in 2018. (I.e if you believe that Ashes 2017-18 was technically won before the New Year's Test in Sydney) . Anyway it's been a tough year for them (yes, we've gone through this narrative before) and a win could help set the ball rolling in the right direction.

What about South Africa then? They're missing Amla and Duminy for sure but even when those two were available, the middle-order never delivered consistently and this problem has persisted heading into the final six months of the World Cup build-up. They would have loved to close out that game in Adelaide.

That's we have a third game in Hobart! There's a chance for redemption. Winner takes the series. Simple? Now read the preview.
