India vs West Indies, 1st Test - Live Cricket Score, Commentary

Series: Windies tour of India, 2018 Venue: Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot Date & Time: Oct 04-Oct 0809:30 AM LOCAL

That's all from us folks! Hope you enjoyed India's win. Until next time then ...

Here's what the players had to say:

Shaw - Man of the Match: It was a great win for the team, more happy for the team. Can't imagine my debut like this. Whenever you play international cricket, there's always a challenge. Was looking to play my natural game, like I do in first-class.

Kohli, India captain: Don't think you can compare the two conditions. That was a bigger challenge, something we don't experience day in and day out. Guys understand how to play in these conditions and they were clinical. That's not something for me to speak upon. I'm sure, as a team, they'd want to rectify their errors. We want to improve upon the things we need to do. Happy that the guys put in a clinical performance. Especially delighted for Prithvi and Jaddu. The way Prithvi dominated on debut was great to see. He just grabs his opportunity with both hands. Exciting to see from a captain's point of view. Jaddu as well, he's scored important runs for us in the past. We believe he can change games for us. Pretty good. If you see the first innings, the way Shami and Umesh ran in. Spinners are clinical in these conditions anyway. Kuldeep outstanding in the second innings, Ashwin in the first. Over rates had to do a bit with the umpires who were pushing us, not allowing us to drink water. Spinners bowl so much in India, we're never going to fall short of the overs anyway.

Brathwaite: Not the best of starts, credit to India. They showed us how to bat. Quite disappointed. Didn't get enough partnerships as a batting unit. Two or three partnerships would hold us very well. One thing we said in our meeting was to be as positive as possible. Not sure if Holder will be fit for the next game.

Ashwin: I wanted to get my rhythm back and I somewhat managed to do that today, I was a bit apprehensive yesterday. I had a good stint at NCA and before that in England. It's a fair amount of difference Kuldeep is talking about, playing with the SG and Dukes. This ball (SG) doesn't swing that much and adaptation takes time. I like the red SG and Kookaburra. The SG is slightly a better ball and Dukes is also right up there. But I am pretty disappointed with the SG ball at this point of time. When I started playing first-class cricket, the SG ball used to be top notch and you could bowl with it even after 70th or 80th over. The seam used to be standing up strong and straight, it's not the same anymore. I generally believe that in the second innings is better. This wicket was a slightly better and I was surprised with the amount of attacking shots that were played against the spinners.

Kuldeep: It's very difficult to bowl with the red ball straightaway when you are coming from white ball cricket. Sometimes it takes time to adjust. I bowled too full in the first innings, I bowled according to the wicket and the batsman in the second innings. Kookaburra red ball is good to grip. SG is okay at the moment. Ravi Shastri told me to try and bowl from round the wicket. I was happy with that angle. I am more used to the white ball. I am learning and I am happy with the way it all came out.

ALL OVER - INDIA WIN BY AN INNINGS AND 272 RUNS

Doesn't take long for India to wrap things up. Jadeja gets both wickets. A complete performance from India but not too much can be read into this win. Windies were poor, below par and didn't show any application at all.

Special game this for several players - Shaw (maiden ton on debut), Jadeja (maiden ton) and Kuldeep (maide five-wicket haul). Kohli too got his 24th Test ton. Plenty of problems for Windies but they have been there for a while and there are no quick fixes.

TEA - WINDIES 187 for 8; TRAIL BY 283

Kieran Powell stroked an attacking 83 but his effort was nullified by Kuldeep Yadav's maiden five-wicket haul as India cruised towards a massive win in the session.

Powell and Shai Hope started positively in the second session but failed to string in a significant stand. On the first over of the day, in the Windies first innings, Kuldeep was swept with disdain for two boundaries by Keemo Paul. Things didn't change much for him throughout the innings as he leaked at over six runs per over and had only one wicket to show for. In the second innings, when Powell attacked Ashwin to pick up a few runs, it was Kuldeep who started the Windies fall.

Just when the Powell-Hope stand looked threatening, Kuldeep trapped the latter plumb in front to create an opening. That was all he needed as he schooled the Windies batsmen into submission. Shimron Hetmyer too tried to attack his way out, like Powell, but failed in execution. He lobbed a simple catch to point to give the left-arm spinner his second wicket. Lack of application and belief was all too evident as Windies batsmen lost the plot rather quickly. Sunil Ambris failed to read a googly from Kuldeep as he walked out of the crease. The ball spun past the outside edge before Rishabh Pant completed the stumping.

Roston Chase, the pillar in the first innings, smashed one to cover to leave the visitors five down with just 138 on the board. Powell continued to attack and reached his sixth Test half-century off 65 balls. As wickets fell around him, he too slowed down. The opener looked at sea against Kuldeep in the first session and eventually fell to him in the 36th over. Tossed up on off, Powell closed the bat face early and lobbed a catch to Prithvi Shaw at silly point. The wicket gave Kuldeep his first five-wicket haul in Tests as he became the second bowler to take five-fers in each of the three formats for India after Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Ashwin struck on the last ball before the break to leave India just two wickets away from a massive win.

Earlier in the day, Paul and Chase frustrated India with their 73-run seventh-wicket stand before Umesh Yadav had Paul caught at midwicket trying to pull a short one. Ashwin wrapped up the innings quickly, racing to four wickets in the innings, as Windies folded for 181. India had no hesitation in enforcing the follow on as Ashwin struck early again - removing Kraigg Brathwaite in the last over before the Lunch break.

JADEJA JOINS THE FUN: Paul wanted to enjoy himself with the match lost. Attacks Jadeja and gives an easy catch to Umesh at long-off.

Windies 172 for 7

This #INDvsWI Test: @PrithviShaw : Maiden Test hundred (on debut) @imjadeja :Maiden Test hundred @imkuldeep18 :Maiden five wicket haul.
06 Oct 2018

MAIDEN FIVE-FOR: Kuldeep has bagged his first five-wicket haul in Tests. He gets rid of Powell this time. All five wickets coming in the session for him. Powell made a quick 83 but India were always in control. Kuldeep becomes the second bowler to take five-fers in each of the three formats for India after Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Windies 157 for 6

FIVE DOWN: Fourth wicket for Kuldeep. Chase caught at short cover trying to drive on the up. The second, like the first, is a total mess. These are his best figures in Test.

Windies 138 for 5

KULDEEP ON FIRE: He was taken for runs in the first innings but has turned things around beautifully. Googly this time and Ambris walked out of the crease. The ball spun past the outside egde before Pant completed the stumping. Roston Chase came out to bat today. He's out there again.

Windies 97 for 4

ONE MORE: Kuldeep now gets Hetmyer. Wanted to attack the left-arm spinner. Wanted to got for the big one but the outside edge lands with Rahul at point.

Windies 97 for 3

50 FOR POWELL: Sixth Test half-century for Powell. Works a length ball to the third man boundary. Good attacking innings this from the left-hander. Gets there off 55 balls.

Windies 92 for 2

TWO DOWN: Kuldeep has trapped Hope. Full and it spun back in. Hope went back and missed the flick. Trapped plumb in front.

Windies 79 for 2

The players are back for the second session, Ashwin to start ...

LUNCH DAY 3 - Windies 33 for 1; trail by 435

Windies started Day 3 of the first Test trailing by 555 and failed to inspire any confidence as they folded. The session followed an expected script with the Windies lower-order attacking, knowing very well the innings won't last long, and managed to add only 87 to their overnight score. India had no hesitation in asking the visitors to follow on with a handy first-innings lead of 468.

There was some entertainment, and a bit of frustration for the home team, as Roston Chase and Keemo Paul attacked Kuldeep Yadav to get going. They stretched their stand to 73 before Umesh Yadav had the latter caught at mid-wicket trying to pull a short ball. However, even when Kuldeep was swept for boundaries, the pair failed to raise hopes. It was all too easy for India right from the start.

Once Paul fell, Chase got to his sixth half-century in the 40th over. The moment of the day, as expected, came from an Indian bowler. R Ashwin teased chase to come forward and drive away from the body, then defeated the tall reach with a last-moment dip before the ball turned a mile to crash into the sticks. Sherman Lewis and Shannon Gabriel failed to read the carrom ball from Ashwin and lost their wickets as the innings last just 48 overs.

Kieran Powell took on Ashwin early on picking up a six and a four in the second over of the innings in the second essay. The Windies pair looked confident and yet failed to survive the session. Brathwaite tapped a length ball straight to short leg to give Ashwin his fifth wicket in the match. Powell, for all his attaching play against the offspinner, looked at sea against Kuldeep but will hope he's able to steer the innings forward in the second session.

Indian players are out there and so the Windies openers. Will it be over today?

ALL OUT: Three for Ashwin. Another carrom ball and Gabriel is stumped. We expected this, didn't we? Windies fold early on Day 3 for just 181. They've been asked to follow on. They add 87 to their overnight score. The innings lasted just 48 overs.

NINE DOWN: Ashwin is on a roll here. Carrom ball on the stumps, Lewis didn't pick it. Played for the off spinner and that went away from the bat to take out the off stump.

Windies 159 for 9.

CHASE BOWLED: Peach! Wow! Full and wide, tossed up and invites chase to drive away from the body. He was beaten by the flight and then the ball turned a mile before crashing into the stumps. Chase was confused. India have got the eighth now.

Windies 159 for 8.

50 FOR CHASE: Kuldeep continues to be expensive and Chase has crashed another boundary. Full and tossed up, driven past the bowler. Windies past 150 as well.

Windies 157 for 7

WICKET: Umesh has ended the stand. Short ball and Paul has pulled it to midwicket. India needed this wicket. The stand was becoming more and more frustrating.

Windies 147 for 7

Windies are looking to play positive cricket. They are six down and need runs so both Chase and Paul are playing their shots. There have been a few boundaries but nothing that should threaten India. They've now added 50 for the seventh wicket as well.

Windies 127 for 6.

100 UP: Two boundaries by Paul in the first over. They pick 10 and cross the 100-run mark.

Windies 104 for 6.

Virat Kohli leads his team out, Chase and Paul walk out to bat as well. Kuldeep will bowl for the first over of the day ...

Day 2 belonged to Jadeja. After Shaw's debut ton, it was time for Jadeja to score his maiden ton. Virat Kohli scored his 24th Test ton, went past 1000 runs in 2018 and continued to show his immense hunger for runs.

Pant attacked early on and raced to 92 while Kohli enjoyed the show from the other end. Once Kohli was dismissed, it was Jadeja who attacked and kept Windies on the mat. India gave Jadeja the opportunity to get to a ton by delaying the declaration and he didn't disappoint.

Here's Shirsh writing about the special homecoming for Jadeja.

"The Windies are in a huddle at the moment, wonder what that motivational speech would be like to lift the sagging spirits. The Indian team looks quite relaxed, have just finished setting up the equipments for the warm-ups to begin," says our man Shirsh who is at the venue.

Hello and welcome to the live blog of the third day's play between India and Windies in the first Test in Rajkot. Big day ahead, a sort of day that can set the tone for the whole tour.

Windies have been poor so far. The bowlers failed to build any pressure while the batsmen failed to show any kind of application as the team slipped to 94 for 6. With a mountain ahead of them, it'll be interesting to see how they approach the third day.

India will be looking to wrap things up today itself and it's crucial Windies put up a fight and bag some confidence.
